Westgate

Westgate sits on the Sea of Dragons- at its far western end. It is ruled by the Night Masks- named for their foreboding keep of the same name. The Night Masks are a oligarchy of dwarves: "Westgate dwarves" who are quite distinct from other dwarves. They are a ethnic group who have occupied Westgate for thousands of years. The keep is built out of a large crop of rock- which gives the appearance of a mountain stretching up into the cloudy sky. It is suggested that the dwarves built the keep to resemble the mountain they do not possess. Westgate dwarves are terrifically sensitive about their perceived lack of mountain and are often insulted with the dwarven slur "Doth Carl" which means roughly: "mountainless". Westgate dwarves make up the majority of the population of Tidetown. Tidetown is the shanty town barely above the water line at the base of the Night Mask keep. It is a violent and cut throat place. Westgate is known as the "city of coin". As long as you have gold in your pocket you can pay your way out of any situation... when the gold dries up however- all bets are off. Westgate is a ruthless city only ever unified by the need to send forth the armies of Westgate for commercial interest. All civilians of Westgate are considered conscripts at all times- and if need be the city can field one of the most ruthless and blood thirsty armies in Faerun.
