Obsidian Brotherhood

Overview

The Obsidian Brotherhood is one of the two most notorious crime syndicates in the City of Llyne, holding a dominant position in the city's criminal underground. Known for their ruthless tactics and tight control over the magical black market, the Brotherhood has become a formidable power in the city. Their primary rivals, The Crimson Eclipse, contest their influence, particularly in the outskirts where the Brotherhood's grip is less secure.

Leadership

Odo Parrish

Position: Leader (Currently Missing) Description: Odo Parrish is the enigmatic and cunning leader of the Obsidian Brotherhood, known for his ability to maintain a delicate balance of power with the Crimson Eclipse. His strength lay in his sly and subtle tactics, often working from the shadows to ensure the Brotherhood's supremacy without provoking open conflict. Under Odo's leadership, the Brotherhood consistently outmaneuvered their rivals, leveraging his strategic mind and knack for diplomacy to keep tensions low while gaining the upper hand. His mysterious disappearance has plunged the Brotherhood into uncertainty, with many believing the Crimson Eclipse is responsible. The search for Odo and the quest to restore his subtle yet effective leadership is now a top priority for the Brotherhood lest Hilde's bonebreaking tactics cause a tipping point in the deadly conflict.

Hilde Bonebranch

Position: Second-in-Command (Acting Leader) Description: Hilde Bonebranch, a formidable and intimidating dwarf, has taken the reins of the Obsidian Brotherhood in Odo's absence. Known for her iron fist leadership, unwavering stubbornness, and ability to strike fear into anyone who opposes her, Hilde ensures the Brotherhood remains a force to be reckoned with. Her strong intimidation tactics and resolute determination keep the organization's morale high and members in line. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Odo's disappearance, Hilde's leadership has kept the Brotherhood's operations running smoothly and effectively, as she spearheads the search for their missing leader and the campaign against the Crimson Eclipse.     The Obsidian Brotherhood is one of the two major crime syndicates in the City of Llyne. Over the past few years, they have reigned over the magical blackmarket in the major parts of the city. However, due to their weakened control over the outskirts, compared to the Crimson Eclipse, they have had issues with smuggling goods in and out of the city. The Brotherhood's leader, Odo Parrish, has gone missing, and the Brotherhood believe the Crimson Eclipse is to blame. In retaliation, their primary goal is the obstruct the Crimson Eclipse by any means necessary.

Activities

The Obsidian Brotherhood's primary operations revolve around the magical black market. They deal in rare and illicit magical items, potions, and spell components, supplying and controlling much of the magical contraband within Llyne. Despite their stronghold in the city's major parts, their influence wanes in the outskirts, where smuggling operations face significant challenges and competition from the Crimson Eclipse.

Key Operations:

  • Extortion and Protection Rackets: The Brotherhood enforces protection rackets within their territory, offering "protection" in exchange for regular payments. Failure to comply often results in swift and brutal retaliation.
  • Smuggling: Due to weakened control over the outskirts, smuggling magical goods in and out of the city has become problematic. The Brotherhood is actively seeking ways to strengthen these routes and undermine the Crimson Eclipse's interference.
  • Assassinations and Sabotage: In retaliation for Odo's disappearance, the Brotherhood has intensified efforts to obstruct and dismantle Crimson Eclipse operations through targeted assassinations and acts of sabotage.
  • Ties with The Order of the Light: The Brotherhood maintains good relations with the city's militaria, The Order of the Light. Through strategic bribes and under-the-table deals, they manage to keep the Order's interference in their activities to a minimum, allowing them to operate with relative impunity.
  • Collaboration with Shady Wizards: The Brotherhood works closely with unscrupulous wizards who deal in illegal magic, creating a lucrative market for forbidden spells and enchanted items. This partnership extends to running underground wizard fighting rings, where mages pit their magical prowess against each other for the entertainment of paying spectators and the Brotherhood's profit.

Structure

The Obsidian Brotherhood is structured in a hierarchical manner, with clear roles and responsibilities designed to maintain order, efficiency, and secrecy within the organization. The inner circle of the Brotherhood includes higher-ups who have shown great skill in the Brotherhood's needs as well as cunning assassins and powerful mages.

Culture

The Obsidian Brotherhood's culture is shaped by a blend of fear, loyalty, fraternity, and a strict code of conduct during operations that governs the behavior and expectations of its members. This culture is essential for maintaining order and ensuring the syndicate's continued success amidst the chaos of the criminal underworld.

Brotherhood and Camaraderie

Despite the fear and intimidation, there is also a strong sense of brotherhood and camaraderie among members. Those who prove their loyalty and capability are treated as part of a tight-knit family. This bond is reinforced through shared experiences and the knowledge that they can rely on each other in times of need.

Reward and Merit

The Brotherhood rewards merit and success. Members who excel in their duties, bring in significant profits, or display exceptional skills are rewarded with wealth, rank, and privileges. This meritocratic approach encourages members to strive for excellence and ambition within the organization's framework.

History

The Obsidian Brotherhood was founded in the year 1512, during a transformative period for the City of Llyne. At that time, the city was still in its infancy, being constructed by a coalition of wizard and human guilds who sought a place free from elven control. As the era of unregulated magic, where wizards indulged their selfish whims, was coming to an end, a new order was being established, bringing law and regulation to the burgeoning city.

Founding Era

During this transitional period, as law and order became more commonplace, a clear market for illegal activities emerged. The strict regulations on magic and the desire for a free-wheeling lifestyle created fertile ground for criminal enterprises. It was in this environment that the Obsidian Brotherhood was born, formed by a group of cunning individuals who saw the potential to exploit the growing demand for illicit goods and services.

Establishing Power

From its inception, the Brotherhood quickly established itself as a formidable force within the city's underworld. They capitalized on the restrictions imposed by the new order, providing forbidden magical items, performing illicit services, and operating outside the bounds of the law. Their ability to navigate the shadowy corners of Llyne, combined with their ruthless tactics, allowed them to grow in power and influence.
