Civilization and Culture
History
Elves originally emerged as a single race, without subraces or variations. All elves were equal, created as companions to the elven god Corellon .
Over time, some elves grew restless, desiring more from life than endless celebrations and songs. A group known as the Rhae'velahr (Untamed Brotherhood) formed, led by Araushnee, later known as Lolth. They believed Nórëlondë (their name for the world) offered more than just joy and music, and sought to experience adventure, tension, and emotions like fear, desire, and regret. However, their elven bodies struggled with these new emotions, drawing them underground. They retreated beneath the earth's crust into the Underdark, where they remained unheard of for tens of thousands of years until the early days of the dwarves.
The elves who remained, disturbed by the Rhae'velahr's departure, rejected such behavior and the perceived scorn for their Edar's (Father's) gift, referring to Corellon. This marked the beginning of hostility between the elves and those who left, later known as the Drow Elves.
Those who stayed began calling themselves Arn'quessir (Noble People or High Elves), believing themselves to be the wiser among elves. The Drow were initially called Ulu'quessir or Dor'quessir, meaning "Deep People" or "Dark People."
After the gods granted magic to mortals, the High Elves developed a keen interest in it. They mastered its use, discovering spells and the secrets of druidism. Over years of magical experimentation, some elves began to diverge from their original forms, giving rise to the Lythari. These elves possessed a great gift for shapeshifting and formed the first elven subgroup to amicably separate from the High Elves, becoming shapeshifters instead of mages.
Some Lythari retreated to the forests, while others remained with the High Elves. Those who separated gradually became closer to wild tribes and were later known as Wild Elves due to their feral nature away from civilization.
As High Elves discovered concepts of building and construction, creating dwellings and grand palaces, some elves preferred a life closer to nature. They separated and became known as Taur'quessir, the Wood Elves.
The First Elven War erupted during the Dragonkind Era, dividing the High Elves into two factions: the Golden or Sun Elves, and the Silver or Moon Elves. This war was fought over whether the moon or sun would become the source of power for future generations. After long years, the Sun Elves emerged victorious. This conflict permanently damaged relations between elven societies, leading to their separation.
Elves who refused to participate in the First Elven War departed to other realms. Some went to Faërlond (the Feywild), eventually becoming the Eladrin, while others retreated to Lómëndor (the Shadowfell), becoming the Shadar-Kai elves.
