History
The Moon Elves, also known as Silver Elves or Ithil'quessir, trace their origins to the earliest days of elven civilization. They emerged as a distinct subrace during the First Elven War in the Dragonkind Era, which divided the High Elves into two factions: the Sun Elves and the Moon Elves. This war was fought over whether the moon or sun would become the source of power for future generations of elves.
Although the Sun Elves ultimately emerged victorious in this conflict, the Moon Elves maintained their distinct identity and culture. The war permanently damaged relations between elven societies, leading to their separation and the establishment of distinct elven subraces.
The Moon Elves' connection to Selune, the moon goddess, became a defining aspect of their culture and abilities. This bond was strengthened when a group of Lythari elves, who had remained loyal to Selune during the Second Elven War, merged with the Moon Elves. This merger brought new magical abilities and a deeper connection to the moon's power.
Selune granted her followers, including the Moon Elves, the ability to recognize those who had "betrayed" her for the nature god Sylvanus. This gift became a powerful tool against lycanthropes and other shapeshifters, as moonlight could reveal their true nature. The Moon Elves, embracing their role as Selune's chosen, became known for their opposition to lycanthropy and other forms of shapeshifting magic.
Over time, the Moon Elves developed a strong affinity for silver, both as a decorative material and as a weapon against shapeshifters. This association with silver, combined with their pale skin and silvery hair, led to their alternative name of Silver Elves.
The Moon Elves eventually settled in the heart of Nórëlondë, establishing their home in a vast forest that came to be known as the Seldarine Forest. This forest became a stronghold of Moon Elf culture and a bastion of Selune's influence in the mortal world.
Moon Elven society is characterized by a deep reverence for the moon and its cycles, an affinity for magic (particularly illusion and divination), and a complex relationship with the natural world. While they share the elven love of nature, their opposition to lycanthropy and certain forms of shapeshifting sets them apart from other nature-oriented elven subraces.
The Moon Elves continue to play a significant role in elven affairs, often serving as diplomats, mages, and guardians against the threats of uncontrolled shapeshifting and lycanthropy. Their history and culture remain deeply intertwined with the broader tapestry of elven civilization, representing a unique blend of celestial influence and elven tradition.
