Tanglebeast

One of The Failed, the Tanglebeast is only ever encountered singly, and it appears to be the same being each time, as it displays a knowledge and a memory of previously encountered locations and equipment. Given the Tanglebeast has been slain no less than four times by the Imperial Army, this is somewhat of a contradiction. The most popular theories are either that is it the same creature each time, somehow regenerating in The Underworld, or that the species as a whole has some form of shared memories, so that each individual is aware of the experiences of the others. This makes defeating the creature difficult, as it remembers its previous death, and takes measures to avoid it.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A long, lithe body, with two large, membranous wings, covered in a thick hide that has the texture and look of old leather. Instead of legs, the Tanglebeast has dozens of tentacles, tipped with a long, sharp, hook like claws. At the end of a long neck it has a wide head, and a large, circular mouth filled with shorter tentacles also tipped with a sharp tooth that it uses to draw its prey into its maw before swallowing it whole. The mouth is surrounded by small, compound eyes. The creature is around three meters from where the body branches into its tentacles to its head, with a wingspan of about six meters.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Whilst the numerous eyes of the Tanglebeast give it excellent all-round vision, their compound nature means that its not as clear and defined as typical mammalian eyes, but rather better suited to detect movement than detail. It appears to have very little sense of smell, but acute hearing, especially in the higher pitched range. With a reaction time faster than one might expect from such a large creature, all this makes the Tanglebeast very difficult to approach with stealth.
