Recover Some Property - The Chef & the Gambler

General Summary

Mavron Mews found some willing assistants to recover a debt and make an example. The first, a gambler named Eldric Abernathy, was a gambler who had gotten in too deep with the loanshark. After tracking him through the Death Dells Tavern fight club and a few other gambling halls along undead-infested roads to Fjordhaven.   Along the way, the party confronted a group of Church worshippers gathered outside the cathedral of Waukeen in Willowdale. Braskan, a follower of the deity, confronted the woman preaching and called her "Shadow of Lathander" a false god, to which she responded with a smile and a prayer. Braskan found the ratfolk priests of Waukeen cowering inside, but did not waste his time trying to comfort them, leaving the situation to resolve itself.

Once they found the gambler in a card tournament at the Last Stand Tavern, Braskan played a few hands and gained the last coppers the man had, realizing there was nothing to his name. Unmoved by the his situation, Braskan convinced him to meet them at a deserted area of the docks to play in a secret high stakes game. Once there, they murdered their target with only a little hesitation from Asriel, and Braskan used spells to make it look like a suicide, then set the abandoned dockhouse on fire to cover up the scorchmarks left behind by the attack.

After a night of bad dreams, Braskan and Asriel shook off the pangs of guilt, but Jareith had some trouble getting his spells granted by his scorpion familar. The arachnid stubbornly refused to cooperate, and Jareith's pleas did nothing to help. Eventually, the scorpion did relent, but not until the next day.   Next, the party followed the trail of Chef Rameses to a bar in Falcon's Hollow, Jak'a'Napes. There, they found the chef preparing meals that, while quite unsavory to the living, had found a special clientele. An invisibility spell and some scouting got the party into the kitchen to confront the foulmouthed chef, and they discovered a vile ingredient in the process. Seizing the opportunity, the party forced Chef Rameses to show them the gold he owed Mavron Mews for getting him on his feat with supplies, and the party promised not to reveal the hand they found in the soup, avoiding a fight with the chef's ghoul bodyguard as well.   On the return trip, the party experienced a Sovereignty "prank" left for them by some teenagers: a zombie cow that gored Asriel half to death. The punks are at large.

Mavron Mews was so happy about their success that he threw in a bonus, and let them keep Eldric's Lucky Coin, a two-sided Sovereign gold piece that served as proof the gambler had been made an example.
