To the Victor Belong the Spoils, Part 1

General Summary

...to have Raffyr appear in front of him for both questioning and likely to kill the leader of the Arbour kingdom. Nihilus' hopes were dashed though as even the great power that Nihilus had made his deal with was unable to overcome the great willpower of Just Raffyr. With much sacrificed and nothing gained, Nihilus and his group traveled to Willow Enclave to meet up with Diavolo and begin final preparations for war. First the portal between allied cities needed to be disabled. Armed with a special magical item, her wit, and a strong invisibility spell Runa arrived in Fjordhaven, disabling the portal and retreating before she was found, but not before seeing a few curious, shady figures starting to gather around the portal. After a long rest and some coercive discussion Nihilus realized he may have another chance at northern leadership. With the help of a few strategic sending spells a trap was laid. In the hopes of using the Arbour Council's need to save people against them Nihilus leveraged their capture of Runa's ward as bait. Once they had decided the bait was taken they teleported to the meeting point, or at least attempted too. Nihilus, Musashi, and Runa found themselves somewhere in the oceans west of The Black Forest, and were forced to teleport again to catch up with Grud, Diavolo, and Zabur. Though they were shocked with what they found when they arrived.

Raffyr burst into Tiff's school short of breath. He had little understanding of what had just happened to him, but he knew it was probably bad. After describing the hand that had reached down from the heavens and attempted to pluck him from the keep Tiff assured him he was likely safe for now, though other concerns quickly started to plague her mind. She sent out guards with a message, to gather the children under the council's care back to the school and bring Rico back to her. While waiting she made contact with an old 'friend', Elliot. First the kids were ushered to a safe place within the school with a promise that when they came back out it would be to see their lost sister. Not long after both Elliot and Rico arrived and were made privy of the current situation. Soon after messages began to come in from Fjordhaven, Bombo was nervous after some strange ecological events and wished to put the Arbour Kingdom on standby as he had his own armies do the same. Just as the Arbour Kingdom was absorbing this fact a panicked guard arrived at the school, informing them that the portal to Fjordhaven was no longer working! A flurry of messages quickly started between Tiff and Bombo to try and gather information from each side. Elliot began to make preparations to start gathering information with the many mages at his beck and call. With the kids secured the rest of the group moved to inspect their end of the portal. Finding no foul play on their end they moved to contact Bombo again, but it seemed contact had been lost somehow. Unwilling to act without further information Tiff began working through the night to learn of the exact whereabouts of Elyon while Elliot continued fruitlessly but tirelessly working to gather what intelligence he could for Arbour. Tiff received a cryptic message from her attempts at divination. A non dwarven army was attacking Fjordhaven. Quickly they attempted to get the message out to Bombo, who thankfully seemed to receive it this time. Bombo let them know he had sent a trusted follower to investigate news of the broken portal, but with the new knowledge he'd be heading to investigate this army himself, requesting assistance with the portal once it was safe. Arbour, unsure what they could do to help with a whole army while theirs were stuck in the north, continued their efforts to gather information on just what exactly was going on, but their efforts bore little fruit. Some time later Bombo got in contact with Arbour through a messenger, letting them know that the army in Fjordhaven had been taken care of, and again asking for assistance with the portal. Unsure if there was even anything to be done Arbour sent Elliot to assist. Elliot returned sometime later, despite his power over portals nothing he tried seemed to work to repower the great gate, leaving Fjordhaven and Xiomara unlinked. Further fruitless efforts at gathering information were made, when suddenly Tiff got an unexpected message. Runa's voice in her head letting her know that she had escaped the Sovereign's grasp and was hoping for Tiff's assistance in returning north. Asking to meet on the south side of Haven's Escape. Tiff was dubious, as less than an hour before she had confirmed that Elyon was within the temple. But they couldn't risk wasting such an opportunity if it was true, so the party cast a myriad of spells as a precaution and teleported into place, preparing an ambush before okaying the meeting place for the exchange. Not too long after a few figures appeared...
-----
Bombo received reports of a trio of earthquakes rippling through Stag's Redoubt. Worried about the city and its citizens he quickly traveled there with the help of Captain Savin Senriel, finding a city not quite in ruins, but heavily damaged. The armies reserved within the city were brought out of their damaged or destroyed barracks to help survivors out of the rubble and to survey damages. Bombo went to the wall to inspect the damage while Savin began preparations for an attack, believing a trio of earthquakes to not be a natural phenomena. All the while the group maintained contact with Arbour Kingdom, believing they would need to enact the treaty they'd created at any moment. While overseeing repairs throughout the city Bombo got a new report, the portal between Fjordhaven and Xiomara had turned off seemingly on its own! Mere moments later Bombo received a message from Arbour Kingdom that their own portal had been disabled. Worry wracked the young leader but he put it to the back of his mind for the moment. Now with the knowledge that he may be without Arbour Kingdom's reinforcements, he asked Tiff to investigate the portal and redoubled his efforts on fixing the extensive damage to Stag's Redoubt along with Savin Senriel. As they worked the pair found Matten working on his own preparations within the city. Now combining their efforts they hoped to bring Stag's Redoubt back to some form of normalcy for its citizens, but before they could continue their work Bombo received a much more worrying update from his allies in Arbour Kingdom. An army was attacking Fjordhaven! Having little time to worry about the how and the when Bombo ordered Matten to march with the armies from Stag's Redoubt while he and Savin Senriel teleported above Fjordhaven to assess the situation from the air. Flying above Bombo and Savin Senriel quickly realized that indeed there was an army somehow within Fjordhaven. Not only that but they had captured a few citizens and were holding them within a perimeter around Fjordhaven's currently deactivated portal to Xiomara. The situation for the strange invaders seemed dire though, completely surrounded in their makeshift barricades by the stalwart defenders of Fjordhaven. With them unable to escape Bombo barely contained his rage and flew down to meet with what seemed like the leader of this strange militia all covered in silver. Their discussion quickly devolved into an argument as the religiously devoted militia captain accused both Bombo and Savin Senriel of being secret werewolf infiltrators. Savin Senriel stepped up confidently to prove he was not what he was accused of, and after passing the strange leader's tests they relented, somewhat confused. Their fears of a werewolf abated the religious leaders became less hostile, announcing their intentions truthfully. They had been sent to the plane of Pandora to strike down evil in the holy name of Lathander! Specifically they had been informed that a cabal of werewolves had infiltrated the leadership of the Fjordhaven Kingdom. Seeing as this wasn't the case they asked Bombo where they might continue their holy crusade. Savin Senriel was more than happy to suggest a place, West Haven. In his graciousness he even provided the followers of Lathander one of his boats, letting them sail off along the coastline. Now with the threat to Fjordhaven thwarted Bombo let Matten know to turn the armies around back towards Stag's Redoubt and got some help from the local temple to tell the people of Arbour Kingdom that there was no longer and army within the city, but insisted he needed their help to repair the portal before things were too late. The reply Bombo received was the arrival of Elliot, who came to investigate the portal. The former expert of portals tried the few tricks he had left to him to reactivate the massive gateway to no avail. The mage, frustrated by the long back and forths between the kingdoms, decided to offer a mental link to Bombo, to let them communicate the same way they had been all day. Sticking around just long enough to offer King Bombo the linking spell and an apology before disappearing. Now knowing he would have no chance at assistance from The North, Bombo's gaze turned westward, returning to Stag's Redoubt to finish preparations within the city with Savin Senriel at his side. Some time later, a voice entered Savin Senriel's mind. A mix of panic and excitement in it as it told him they knew where the Sovereign was! Describing the land as best he could so Savin Senriel could come assist with a battle already in full swing. With little hesitation Savin Senriel left Stag's Redoubt, his work already done, and teleported to the battlefield...
------
Thanks to the mystical mishap with teleportation, Grud, Zabur, and Diavolo arrived at the meeting point alone. Things were quiet, almost too quiet. Diavolo's imp knew things were not as it seemed though. The trio began to stalk the area with weapons drawn. Suddenly in a flurry of magical energy, the three were enveloped by spells that seemed to be appearing from thin air! Grud and Zabur were forced to retreat while Diavolo was quickly knocked to the ground unconscious. A few moments later Musashi, a drenched Runa, and an unfamiliar man appeared in the clearing. Seeing reinforcements had arrived Grud and Zabur returned ready for the battle to start in earnest. The fighting was fierce but didn't last long, the councilmembers from Arbour Kingdom overpowered those from The Sovereignty, leaving them no choice but to retreat. The unknown man took hold of a badly battered Grud and Musashi along with Zabur and teleported the four of them away. While they were gone Savin Senriel appeared after a frantic conversation in Elliot's head with Matten in tow. A small scuffle started with Runa as she attempted to flee, and the unconscious Diavolo was magically turned into a turtle. The strange man then appeared again, scooping up the turtilified Diavolo and warning all there that if they returned to The Sovereignty they would be walking to their own deaths while ensuring the death of Elyon who was still captured there. Then before anyone could react teleporting away, leaving just Runa there. Left frustrated by both the disappearance of the members of The Sovereignty and Runa's betrayal some moved to take her into custody, but others decided they'd had enough of her betrayal. In a flash of explosive power she was left dead in the grass. A final shot from Savin Senriel's gun to the ioun stone her soul retreated to and a brutal slash of Rico's sword finished the job. Members of the Arbour Kingdom returned to begin planning for an operation of their own while Savin Senriel and Matten returned to The Kingdom of Fjordhaven to continue setting up their defenses of the city.
-------
With all avenues of espionage and assasination thwarted it was time to put an end to the games, it was time for war. The Sovereignty's armies marched out from Saltmarsh with haste, hatred in the eyes of those who could hate, ready to put an end to the dwarven city. Seeing their approach there was little time for further preparation. The armies within Stag's Redoubt marched to the walls ready to defend their city from the evil of The Sovereignty. As the armies of The Eternal Sovereignty marched closer a call was made to Selune from Savin Senriel, hoping for her aid. A massive, glowing creature then arrived floating upon a cloud through a portal created by Savin Senriel's call. After reprimanding the captain heavily for his hesitation to gather aid and in ending the threat of The Sovereignty he answered Savin Senriel's call. Agreeing to aid The Kingdom of Fjordhaven in the battle for the city on the condition that Savin Senriel would dedicate his soul wholly to the service of Selune. Live or die Savin Senriel would return with the creature to Selune's divine realm, there always to defend The Moonmaiden. Once he'd agreed more portals opened up as a horde of angelic creatures answered the outsider's call. Now with a shining beacon of hope Savin Senriel joined his forces on the wall along with the angels. Little was left to decide for either side, all that was left was to fight. The The Sovereignty's forces took heavy losses crossing the moat to begin their assault on the walls proper. Leaving them vulnerable to a hail of attacks from The Kingdom of Fjordhaven's forces. Unfortunately for Fjordhaven their large spellcaster militias found that their spells had failed them in these crucial times, rendering them all but useless. Then as a powerful siege engine began to rattle the already weakened defenses of Stag's Redoubt those on the wall began to focus what they could on its destruction. All the while the army of angelic creatures had little interest in remaining behind the walls of the city, instead choosing to charge out onto the field of battle, focusing their attention on the armies that offended their nature the most. As the angels soared overhead the armies of The Sovereignty reached the damaged wall and began to scale it, forcing the forces of Fjordhaven on the defensive as they struggled to keep the hordes and massive beasts of The Sovereignty out of the city proper. Then a volley of spells launched from an army of Sovereignty mages gave Captain Savin Senriel an idea, perhaps they were the ones crippling the magic forces within the city! He ordered what few troops he had that were not engaged in melee to focus their fire on the mages, but found even as their number began to dwindle no spellcasting ability returned to his troops. Thanks to the angels and the stalwart defense of the dwarves The Sovereignty began to feel the toll of heavier and heavier losses as the battle went on, while The Kingdom of Fjordhaven was battered but nowhere near breaking. As Grud's army was disbanded his own escape route was blocked off by a pair of the angelic creatures. In solo combat Grud proved his strength to all who oppose The Sovereignty, striking each down with a mighty blow before retreating to safety. Musashi on the other hand was not so lucky as his own army was slaughtered to the man. The ever loyal servant joined his brothers in arms in death, his remains lost to the battlefield. FInally Nihilus' army was battered and broken, what remained of it fleeing to the plains or nearby mountains. The Sovereign meeting with King Bombo surrounded by the corpses of the fallen. Nihilus, weary after the long day of constant fighting, was unable to dodge the great king's mighty blow. When King Bombo lifted his hammer naught but a puddle of the Sovereign remained. Last were the ruthless Guulvorgs slowly ripping away at their armies. Now able to focus solely on them it was long until one was forced to flee and the other was slain. The Kingdom of Fjordhaven was victorious! Though there was no time for celebrating, a second wave from The Sovereignty could be on its way at any moment, and it was time for Savin Senriel's final goodbye. After exchanging a few words with Bombo, the captain was taken along with the battered, burned, and bloodied army of angels back to Selune's realm.
-------
Meanwhile in the north, the Hobgoblins that had spent so long waiting finally took their chance. Based on information from the Sovereign himself that the armies of The North would be preoccupied with defending Fjordhaven they marched armies from their warcamps into Haven's Escape. Upon entering the mountain pass they were surprised to find the massive armies of Honshu marching out for their own counterattack against The Sovereignty! After retreating back some to give their troops time to reorganize for battle rather than a siege, the Hobgoblins and their mighty Guulvorgs attacked Honshu's forces, led by the great general of Honshu Sharra herself. Honshu's forces proved no match for the Hobgoblin armies, few survivors escaped the brutal melee, and none returned with reports of the death of any Hobgoblin forces. Thankfully Sharra survived, retreating to the all too familiar mountains in the mountain pass as the Hobgoblins marched on Lakeside. A sige proved unnecessary in taking the city. What was left of Honshu's armies was quickly dealt with, and soon the Hobgoblins occupied the city, culling any who posed a threat to their new rule. Including a few of the members of the old Honshu council that were not able to escape the city in time. With this the Hobgoblins have established an official foothold within Haven's Escape, a kingdom of their own.
