Putative Brethren
Bizarre pseudo-organisation based around doubt, uncertainty,
Structure
there is no formal structure whatsoever- whenever a location, group, or individual becomes generally associated with the brethren, they either leave, fall apart, or are abandoned.
Nonetheless, loose fraternities called Things exist that gather to discuss their ideas and generally socialise. the secret greeting of the group is a tipping, wavering hand gesture that generally means "sort of" or "unsure". this is both to give them plausible deniability and to carry meta-meaning.
History
- Founded in Iero around 90LF as a reaction to the vogue for the Order Principle among the city's intelligentsia.
- Becomes popular enough to be seen as a threat to the establishment - leader is arrested, and is forced underground.
- Becomes a pseudo-masonic brotherhood, spread across the Nidari Reach and with adherents as far afield as Elritund.
Tenets of Faith
The Only Tenet (variously stated):
- To be Certain is to be Dead
- There is no such thing as a contradiction
- The highest virtue is deniability
- The highest virtue is ambiguity
- The highest virtue is doubt
- the only good community is an amorphous community
- always question
- always change
- always doubt
- refuse to be pinned to a position or stance or attitude
- always maintain plausible deniability.
Ethics
a general attitude of playfulness and prankishness, and its attendant popularity among highly-educated and affluent young people, covers a fundamental sincerity and open-mindedness at the heart of the Brethren's ideology.
