Nidari Reach

Infusions: Water, Jellyfish   A large landlocked sea (though smaller than many other oceans), bordered by Reld lands to the north, the Isthmus to the east, The Giteri to the south, and a soft boundary with Sky-sea to the east. Extremely heavily travelled, and also inhabited by amphibious, jellyfish-infused humans known as Nidari.   Known as Needaroc in Reld.   Politics:   Actually fairly sparsely inhabited, across the centre especially – focused around certain lively areas. All the resources in these regions (e.g. fish, algae blooms etc) are mobile. A "pastoral" model almost.   Mostly separate city-states (and independent mobile Bells). Large expanses of territory are unowned by anyone, free for common grazing   Spats over grazing rights and hunting/herding privileges occasionally happen – for the most part, not too warlike in recent years.   Indentured servitude is common throughout the Reach.   Bamboo Dowo, being relatively recent immigrants to the area, don't have the generations of wealth to back them up and so are generally seen as lower-class, though this is more of a stereotype than anything enforced by social or governmental rules. Also, duelling forms the heart of the Nidari legal system, and since it relies on the use of in-built stings that Nidari have, proper legal representation is denied to other ethnicities.   Professions:
  • Lifters : mostly Nidari, their ability to levitate themselves and extend that to other objects are greater than your typical Nidari. They are also able to tap into the lifting fields of the Bells to move even greater loads, allowing vital supplies to reach the belltop cities.
  • Duellists
Religions:   Ship types: triangular lateen-rigged sails - either 1,2, or 3 - are the default.
  • Sokani sea-wagons, pulled by teams of horses
  • Giterikin seawings, who use feathers for flags and decorations, and sometimes even in place of fabric for the sail.
  • Tchepec cold-haulers - fairly rare, with pewter-lined refrigerated holds
  • Tar-caulked barges from Kerrid
  • Reld-style ships - fairly nondescript, with local variations from Lacrestand, Emshol and Sarlim all popular.
  • Barren Isles bamboo catamarans - tend to have square-rigged sails.
  • Nidari rafts -as much below the water as above it.
  Questions:
  • How valued/rare is fresh water? Do the Nidari need it? Are islands with springs important? Rainwater collection? Desalination mages?

Geography

Types of settlements:
  • Atolls: built into/out of coral often, or just rock on the seafloor. Usually in shallower areas, and often has some above-land section for outsiders/activities related to fire. The bigger ones tend to be more cosmopolitan and varied within themselves, while the smaller ones are the "sticks" of the Nidari world – growing sea-plants and farming oysters and other wildlife. A few breed young Bells for the moving settlements
  • Bells/Bellswarms: enormous jellyfish, with bells hundreds or thousands of metres across. often gather into Bell-moots.
  • Barren Isles: a widespread collection of small islands, infused with bamboo by Dowo expats, supply vital wood for construction in the Reach. They still are known by their pre-Greening name. Greening of the Barren Isles is a big historical event, a couple of centuries before Morcrun's freeing. Are panda-mules beasts of burden?
  • Sokani Archipelago
  • Northern Forts: in the border regions of the Pangol Empire and the Commonwealth of Reld, a series of naval forts, holding navies unafraid to stop and search passing ships, stand as evidence of the escalating risks of war.
    Particular locations and regions:
  • Rithnidloi
  • Port Tendari, in the Barren Isles
  • Highbell : floating at high altitudes, the most prestigious training centre for Lifters in the entire Reach.
  • Biggest bell, legendary, apparently inhabited only by a single, powerful, crazy female Nidari witch.
  • The Slick: near Kerrid, the surface of the water is painted in rainbow colours by the oils carried offshore from that marshy land. In extreme cases, the surface of the sea can even catch fire. a very busy trading route, the lifeless crags that just up from the sea-floor here conceal many pirate crews, as well as giant cormorants. the multihued pollution is harmful to many sea-creatures, including the Bells, who rise to pull their tendrils out of the water in this region. inhabited by Cormorants - granted sentience by a carefully hidden pool of oil - infused with neurons? In the hollow of a whale or leviathan skull? At any rate, a mystery even to most cormorants, a few of whom guard the secret. Pool is in some sea stack or something and may itself be sentient or active.
  • Seabird (cormorant, gull, petrel) - near The Giteri
  • Ice-infused- near Tchepec (pewter) and Lacrestand
  • Cephalopod – near Ulthoc Forest
  • Clay-infused – near Emshol
  • The Deeps - the vast, cold, dark of the deeps underlies the inhabited surface-waters of the Reach, a region unknown to outsiders inhabited by Anglerfish-infused humanoids. they worship Father Deep, a Cthonic diety that is considered demonic by certain faiths (House-of-forms Faiths and Coastal Gyrism). in their culture, "deep" and "low" is considered esteemed, as opposed to "shallow" and "low".

Fauna & Flora

Peoples:
  • Nidari
  • Pearlheads?
  • Anglerfish-infused (dwellers of the deeps) - some can manipulate light. slow to develop, but can live for 200ish years . what is male-female balance like?
  • Many traders and others from neighbouring lands
common species
  • Bells
  • Pandorca
  • giant anemones and sea-slugs that prey on Bells?
  • There are rarely-seen leviathans that live in the deepest parts of the Reach, all transparent organs and lightspots. On rare occasions bells are found with huge bites taken out of them, floating half-submerged in the water, and these beasts are the only possible candidates.
