Tieflings

Created by the influence of Denara in the realm of mortals. Typically born from human mothers, their infernal patronage is evident in their curling horns, prehensile tails, and sclera-less monochromatic eyes.   Tieflings are avoided by most, and watched cautiously by the rest. As a result, tieflings feel at home in the alleys and dark corners of the world.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Tiefling names fall under three categories: names which are consistent with the environment in which they were raised and given by their parents, names of virtues given by a tiefling to themselves, and the closest approximation to demonic names a mortal can fathom.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Tieflings are mistrusted and shunned by most. The notable exceptions are listed below.

Aasimar

Aasimar are like the less fun cousins of tieflings. They may not understand the urge to corrupt, but they do understand what it means to be directly created by a god.

Dragonborn

More than most, the dragonborn will always have need of those who work well in the dark. As a bonus, they are also well funded.

Elves

An elf will greet a tiefling with kindness, but it is likely just to learn a bit more about what goes on behind the strangely colored eyes.

Halflings

They're so quaint, living their simple little lives. But they are also kind and happy to help in a pinch.

Humans

Humans are the most familiar with tieflings - they have coexisted for thousands of years on the Chained Isles. As such, they tend to have the most calm reaction to meeting a tiefling.

Alignment: Tieflings might not have an innate tendency toward evil, but many of them end up there. Evil or not, an independent Nature inclines many tieflings toward a chaotic Alignment.   Darkvision: Thanks to your Infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim Conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in Darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in Darkness, only shades of gray.   Hellish Resistance: You have Resistance to fire damage.   Infernal Legacy: You know the Thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Hellish Rebuke spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a Long Rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Darkness spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a Long Rest. Charisma is your Spellcasting ability for these Spells.
