Horse Herd
Every manor has a horse herd of about twenty animals. These are necessary to keep the knight’s four working horses (charger, 2 rouncys, sumpter) and four more riding horses for the ladies, and five more sumpters. Maintenance of the manor’s normal horse herd is subsumed into the costs of running the manor. Doubling the herd means doubling the number of horses available. The Income here assumes the extras are sold. Horses take two years to become usable, and last for several years. The number sold averages 3 rouncys per year, though sometimes there will be a good charger, other times only a couple of sumpters. Use these numbers when it is necessary to replace a herd, or half a herd, harmed by raiding. Note that this is for ordinary horses, and does not cover breeding of Andalusians and destriers. Also note that horse breeding becomes much more widespread through Arthur’s reign and horses less expensive.- Cost to Buy: Early Periods: £80; After 530: £40

Ditch & Rampart
It is possible to protect a manor house and its outbuildings by digging a 6-8 foot deep ditch around it and heaping the dirt into a mound around the inside. If it is near to a stream or lake, the water can be diverted to make a moat. It is of a size to surround the hall, its courtyard and its buildings, and is large enough to protect all the manor’s people and some of their livestock. It requires 5 professional soldiers to lead the commoners in a defense sufficient to get advantage of the DV. Any fewer and the enemy will find a way to breach it.- Cost: £5 + £2 for a Moat.
