The il-Orah: the Progenitors of Dwarvenkind (ilorah)
Proto-dwarves are believed to have arrived on PÈRYL from elsewhere through a Rift thinny in the ancient past. The thinny was located in the vast caverns on Sarn where their first settlement, long abandoned and forgotten, was called Daoc-nor and housed the sacred temple Yurayurai built around three sacred pillars representing the primary divine patrons of the people called the il-Orah.
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
The dwarven languages, despite their division into increasing mutual intelligibility, are far more static and resistance to change. As such, the case-endings of nouns of the il-Orah still extant. In this case, feminine terminals are as follows:
-is
-ah*
and -ahr
(*making the name of the people and their language feminine.)
-ah*
and -ahr
(*making the name of the people and their language feminine.)
Family names
The il-Orah did not have family names, nor did they have associations of clan. So there were no ersatz family names in the form of clan or patronyms. At best, popular names would be distinguished by vocation or prominent feature, e.g.: ______ the spear forger; _______ the red.
Such distinctions evolved into clan names in all but the Xeccait, the Orange, and the Svor. Both the Xeccait and the Orange later evolved similar clan-like groupings and functional surnames; the Svor never did.
