Svor (svɔr)
Known as the “dark dwarves,” and/or the “dark gnomes," the Svor are the naturally magically inclined dwarf race. Sexually free and not concerned with gendering rôles or adverse to magic, they are hated by “real” dwarves. They are often the most accomplished of Rifters, that is, beings that travel the rifts between worlds. Called Sphor (/sfɔr/) by other dwarves as a slur. Although rarely used, Svahr (/svɑʁ/) is the feminine form. Among the Svor, it is believed that they are closest to the progenitor race of all dwarfkind; the other tribes of dwarves reject this but assert similar positions about themselves. Physically, the Svor appear midway between the body types of dwarves (thick, stocly) and gnomes (wizened, elongated). They tend to have pale, sallow, sickly complexion, and inky blue-black hair. Culturally, the Svor are the most diverse among dwarfkin. Linguistically, they have the most possible phonemes, whereas many dwarven languages are limited primarily--or entirely--to unvoiced consonants, Svor uses both and in fact favours voiced consonants. (This is another trait that irks other dwarves, because of course it does.)
Naming Traditions
Feminine names
Like most dwarven names, feminine Svor names have limited word final syllables. The following terminals appear most frequently from most to least common: -ahr is the most common. -is -ah -i is the rarest. Common female Svor names: Shddai, Hajjis, Thraitah, Tiivvahr
Masculine names
Masculine Svor names follow the standard dwarven convention and almost all end in -or. Variants include -wor, -ror, -ior, -vor, -aor Of the other terminals, -ad and -od (and their respective variants) are the most common. Most mascline names follow the format of C1-C2C2-or--e.g. Mddor; Bgdor; Thbbor--which is pronounced either with a schwa or /ai/ diphthong before the doubled consonant. Hence: Mddor --> /mədːɔr/ or /mɑɪdːɔr/; Bgdor --> /bəgdɔr/ or /bɑɪgdɔr/; Thbbor --> /θəbːɔr/ or /θɑɪbːɔr/ In addition to those listed above some common male Svor names are as follows: Qzazor, daoSvor, Thaonnor, Bgwor, Gwor, Wewwor, Gbbor.
Unisex names
The terminals -is, -ah, -o, and -oc can indicate unisex names. However, -is/-ah have a feminine connotation, and -o/-oc connote masculine. Thus, some dwarven philologists reject the notion that there are any neuter names in the dwarven languages; some go further and argue in the case of the Svor all names are neuter/unisex in stark contrast to the strict gender binary of other dwarves.
Family names
Svor tend not to have family names, and they are the least likely among the dwarves of PÈRYL to break into clans bound by blood. Instead of family or clan names, the Svor tend to have epithets, bynames, or toponymic title. E.g. Mddor the Treacherous; Gddahr of Qzaor; Hajjis the Red. Rarely, these names can be inherited, but this is usually by choice.
Major organizations
The Six Crows are the largest Svoréin organization after the collapse of the Dwarven States and the dissolution of daoSvor.
In Schqhènnite taxonomy, the Svor are Daktloi loiien /dæktlɔi loiːjen/.
