In an alternate universe that the The Phalanx traveled to, Phineas Luna was imprisoned for an unknown reason. Unlike his original variant, he is shown to be timid and thoroughly haunted by his past. 

It is revealed that he came into the possession of the Mind Plate from a different universe.

Personal history

Like his original variant, Phineas was a protege student of Professor Evergreen. He lacked the imperiousness and ambition of his prime variant, however, instead having more compassion.
During his travels, he came to study beneath a researcher who worked with a Zygarde. During this time, he was bullied by his peers, his confidence ground into the dirt until he gained a new lease on life thanks to Koji. Sometime after this, he came into possession of a shiny Nihilego named Antares.
In his universe's Blinding, a variant of Professor Evergreen was going to sacrifice Ava Solaire, who was imbued with the powers of Solgaleo. Before he could sacrifice Ava, however, he was murdered by Phineas and his Liepard. The trauma of this event scarred Ava, and in an attempt to spare her youth, Phineas used Antares to erase her memories and sent her to the Sleepy Snorlax Inn. Driven to grief, Phineas would later have Antares wipe his own memories.
While wandering the region, Phineas would commonly come across different traumatic experiences or atrocities, using Antares to wipe his mind. Unfortunately, possession of the Mind Plate would restore these memories, making Phineas use Antares on a near-daily basis. This constant usage gave birth to a host of side-effects, including short-term memory loss, bursts of delusion and panic, and a crippling addiction to a Nihilego's toxins. The twisted corruption of the Mind Plate further broke Phineas, subjecting him to the worst memories he tried to forget and the vengeful spirit of Evergreen. By the time he was found by the Phalanx, Phineas was a broken man who had locked himself in the dungeon of Castle Sonata to escape life altogether.
