Dragon

Manifestations of the material plane itself, embodiments of its aspects and magic. Dragons inhabit everything from creation stories to each key point in history. Even Thánatos "The Destroyer" was said to be a dragon of sorts. Power, intelligence, longevity, and history all are embodied in the dragons of Potestatem.

Types of Dragons

Four types of dragons broadly categorize the true dragons.
Metallic
Gold, silver, Bronze, Copper, Brass, and Platnium dragons are metallic. They are generally good and the least killy stabby of all the dragons.
Chromatic
Red, Blue, Green, and White dragons generally make up all the true chromatic dragons. Stay away from these dragons.
Crystaline
Amethyst, Emerald, Sapphire, Topaz, Crystal, and Ruby make up the Crystaline dragons.
Material
Many other true dragons inhabit the material plane that are considered true dragons, Lunar, Solar and other dragons are included in this category.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dragons are noted for their key features including but not limited to, a pair of wings, monochromatic, or di-chromatic scales, breath weapons, and long life.

Genetics and Reproduction

Naturally occurring eggs of any dragon type can be found around Potestatem. Notably, each type of dragon's egg will manifest within its preferred region. Metallic dragon eggs often form in stable, representative locations. A Bronze Dragons egg may manifest in a beauteous tropical bay. Chromatic dragon eggs appear in more chaotic regions. To counter the last example a blue dragon egg may be found in a sea cave the constantly fills and empties with the tides. Lastly, the Crystal dragon eggs are found in veins of their respective type. These veins are almost always near a cavern or opening in the earth of some sort.
All eggs take a decade to a century to mature and grow. It is unknown what variables cause a rapid or slow hatching process.

Growth Rate & Stages

Four distinct stages mark each dragon's life, with a fifth being magically possible. Similar to other worlds on the material plane Dragons begin as Wyrmlings. These creatures are often the size of a large humanoid or bear. Posing a great threat to small towns even immediately after hatching.
Over the course of a decade or so the dragon enters its young stage where it is able to begin the markings of any classic dragon. Creating a lair, gathering a small hoard, hunting in a several dozen miles area, and forming alliances, and gaining minions all start in this second decade of life. The young period is around one hundred years for a dragon. After that century their growth physically begins to slow down to a near halt and they are an adult.
The adult stage lasts the longest of any stage for a dragon. five to seven hundred years can pass before a dragon is notably larger, smarter, or any different. As an adult, they are a powerful force usually in several countries and regions. If a dragon manages to survive the harsh life of dragons it will become ancient.
Ancient dragons are typically eight hundred or more years in age. The whole of Potestatem has an estimated one hundred ancient dragons spread across its surface and within its bowls.

Ecology and Habitats

Each dragon type has a specific region it prefers and while not often leave. It is thanks to this fact though that dragons generally end their borders near where their geographical region ends, despite their power to control beyond that line. On the other side, this same fact causes many dragons to terraform their region into a more extreme version of themselves, and expand into other areas.

Dietary Needs and Habits

All dragons maintain an aggressively carnivorous diet. Due to their size this often means an adult dragons hunting grounds can cover more than a hundred square miles.

Biological Cycle

Many dragons are noted for their ability to slumber for long periods of time, with centuries passing between sightings of the same dragon.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Power and age. Dragons are two things, territorial, and solitary. Very little overlap and cooperation occurs between most dragons with the metallic line being the exception. They are much more amiable than the rest.

Domestication

Many dragons reared from the egg have been noted to protect those who raised them. Domestication is impossible as the dragon usually is more intelligent, powerful, and longer living than its owner. Alliances, friendships, and powerful duos have been noted though. What should be asked is, how many of us, have the dragons domesticated?

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Dragons are known for their ties to the magic of the material plane. Blessings pour forth from dragons allies. Many theorize dragons themselves are the embodiment of physical magic in the material plane. Which explains much of their abilities. This magic is also released on death and often damages or empowers their killers with marks and feats.

Minions and allies follow any dragon worth their salt. This can vary from half-dragons to their creations.

Civilization and Culture

History

Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing then of Sardior, ruby-red jewel they made in their likeness; Sardior, first-born of dragonkind, labored alongside Bahamut and Tiamat, Shaping the dragons they crafted: dragons metallic and dragons chromatic. Breathe, dragons—draw in the life-gift breathed into you at the dawn of creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing of the outsiders, war-bringer gods with their mortal adherents; Teeming, they came to the First World, seeking a home for their legions of followers. Mighty in magic and numbers, conquering deities seized their victory. Fallen was noble Bahamut, Sardior hid in the heart of creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing now of Tiamat, raging in battle with no hope of victory. She would not flee or surrender, fighting as death reached its cold claws toward her. War-bringers seized her and bound her, snatched her from death, entombed her in torment— Sealed in the darkness forever, captive to gods laying claim to creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing of the conquest, seeding the world with their legions of followers, Each to their own habitation, elves in their forests and dwarves in their mountains, Orcs in their caverns and canyons, goblins in badlands and halflings in green fields, Lizardfolk lurking in marshes, humans throughout every part of creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing of Bahamut, maker of peace with the outsider deities, Welcomed to mountains celestial, worshiped by some as the Platinum Paladin. Sing of his journeys of seeking, striving to understand gods and their children, Longing for Tiamat’s freedom, grieving her loss from the face of creation.   Breathe, dragons; sing of her freedom— Tiamat loosed from her prison of torment! Tell how she rallied her children, dragons chromatic, a spectrum of mayhem. Sing of her fury, her vengeance, lightning and venom, ice, fire, and corrosion, Five-headed, monstrous, and mighty, rampaging on a campaign of destruction.   Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, scattered in infinite seedling realities. Sing of Bahamut and Tiamat, watching its sundering, mourning their labor. Sing too of Sardior, sundered, consciousness scattered in minuscule fragments.
