Frame painting
The process whereby The Window paints doorframes in Sigil to warn residents which ones are safe to traverse and which ones are not.
History
As Sigil began to grow and more buildings were constructed, more and more doorways began to exist within the city. When the strange magical disturbances began to link these doors to other locations, it became a very dangerous prospect to simply walk from one room to another. If you were unlucky, you could wind up underwater or above an active volcano. Residents quickly learned to mark doors that were dangerous, but these markings were not uniform and therefore frequently misleading. The Window was formed specifically to take control of this process and enforce consistent standards
Execution
There are six colors used to indicate the status of a door:
- Blue: Door is just a normal door
- Green: Door leads to another plane, but the destination is safe and it is easy to return
- Yellow: Door leads to another plane, and the destination is safe, but returning the way you came could be difficult
- Orange: Door leads somewhere dangerous, but returning would be straightforward
- Red: Door leads somewhere dangerous, and returning would be difficult. This designation is also often given to doorways that the cartographers never return from
- Black: Door leads to Carceri, and so returning would be impossible without divine intervention. Such doorways are usually destroyed as soon as they are discovered.
