The Tubes
The homogenous landscape of impermeable HabLock combined with the near endless drizzle of its climate presents serious drainage issues for LBN. Periods of heavy rainfall cause regular flooding in many of its lower sectors. To combat this, massive networks of storm drainage pipes, flood tunnels and underground reservoir tanks are integrated into levels below LBN’s HabLock structure. Due to resource issues and understaffing these facilities, commonly referred to as the Tubes, are often neglected and rarely patrolled.
Since their inception, the Tubes have provided shelter to InMates on the run. Knowledge of countless hidden access points are closely guarded by secret cabals of the most persistent NonComps. In many regions across the LBN, large sections of this network have been sealed off and repurposed by generations of InMates who have reclaimed these as a subterranean refuge from the FED’s tyranny above. Despite their cold, damp and permanent darkness, the Tubes have become home to complex and largely self sufficient societies of renegade InMates, stealing power and supplies from the upper levels and ambushing FED convoys from storm drains. FED guards seldom venture into the Tubes, however most of the major entrances known to them are well guarded. A loose economy is sustained through trade with the largely sympathetic InMates of the upper world. The space and relative freedom available in the Tubes allows for low-tech weapons manufacture and the production of coloured pigments and other illicit goods. These black market economies sustain a bewildering body of NonComp resistance movements who present a growing threat to LBNs security. The Tubes also house a multitude of impressive BioGrog distilleries. These legendary underworld facilities are operated by InMate gangs who fiercely guard their highly volatile still setups. The recipes for their lethally intoxicating concoctions made by combining techniques collated from across the PBA. Some of the larger smooth bored tunnels that stretch seemingly forever into the darkness are used by Tube dwellers as arterial routes for vehicular transport. Smaller tunnels with tortuous routes are popular for racing, both for entertainment and to settle disputes. Ex-bounty hunters from the InMate population are regularly employed to take down defected InMates considered a threat to LBN security. Guvn0r ensures its influence is felt, even in the darkest corners of this subterranean haven. Occasional floods overwhelm the Tubes due to major storms, often with catastrophic results. Thousands of bodies are flushed out at The Taint each cycle.
