Bayerisch
The Bayerisch people are an ethnic group native to the region of Bayern. The area is currently ruled almost entirely by the Principality of Valdmar which is part of the Kingdom of Bartol. Before being brought into Bartol in the Bayerisch Wars, the area consisted of a long string of counties, duchies, principalities, and even kingdoms of various sizes.
Historically the Bayerisch have spoken the Bayer language, though in the 520 years that the region has been part of Bartol, use of the Common tongue has become much more widespread, even in relatively isolated rural areas. While in large part this is due to the Bartolian requirement that Common be used in schools, it also reflects that over the centuries the Bayerisch have come to see themselves as (at least in some sense) Bartolian, as well as Bayerisch.
Bayerisch culture includes a strong warrior ethic, which has been reinforced by a clan structure involving hundreds of different clans. Bayerisch clans started out as family-based units, but over time they grew to include extensive mixing of family lines as well as long standing alliances, both of which served to blur the original boundaries of clans. The Council of Clans was formed over 700 years ago, primarily in response to the founding of the Kingdom of Bartol by Erek Armine in BF 316. The Council gave the leading clans a place to work on common concerns and challenges, from the threat of Bartol to disputes between clans.
In BF 104, King Bernardus Tarana attacked Bayern, starting the Bayerisch Wars which lasted over a decade. In the end, the Bayerisch warriors could not stop the better armed and organized Bartolian army, and in BF 93, the Principality of Valdmar was declared, establishing formal Bartolian rule over almost all of Bayern and its people. While the Council of Clans was not disbanded, it was left with very little power or authority, most of which was transferred to the Prince of Valdmar and their advisors.
In AF 47, a number of clan leaders gathered independently of the Council of Clans to discuss the possibility of some sort of resistance to the increasingly draconian rule of The Cruel King, Azgareth Keranen. In AF 48, the War Chief of Clan Ralto, Mlungusi Ralto, agreed to lead the warriors who had committed to the cause, and the Bayerisch Rebellion was born. Surprisingly to both Bayerisch and Bartolians, the campaigns against the Bartolians went remarkably well, and not only did clan warriors take complete control of Bayern, but they proceeded to enter Bartolis and Borland as well. By AF 51 the Bartolian forces were in complete disarray, and Mlungusi Ralto entered Borland as a conqueror, taking the Golden Throne of Bartol and founding the Ralto Dynasty.
Under the Ralto Kings the Council of Clans was given much greater powers, working in a power sharing agreement with the Prince, with both having some legislative and some executive powers. This arrangement has lasted since that time, even through the transfer of power away from Clan Ralto under the Great Compromise.
