Proxima Centauri b
Proxima Centauri b is a rocky planet slightly larger than Earth. Though it has a thin atmosphere and small bodies of surface water, it is inhospitable to life. This is mostly due to the fact that it is tidally locked. The immense temperature difference leads to extreme weather, as constant storms blow from the cold night side to the hot day side.
Proxima, as the planet is often called for short, can in some sense be seen as Alpha Centauri's equivalent to Mercury. Both planets pose unique challenges for settlers, which are none the less braved by miners because of a wealth of resources. Settlements on Proxima consist of low-slung buildings ducking out of the strong winds. They are located at the terminus line, where the perpetual twilight keeps the temperatures in an acceptable range. Mining here is done underground, as opposed to the surface mining on Mercury.
