Cueyatl Species in Qinla'Un | World Anvil

Cueyatl

Unlike the more peaceful Grippli, the Cueyatl (k-we-ya-tl) are a warrior race of flog-like reptilians. Sharing more in common with the violent lizardmen, they share a similar history to them as the lizardfolk do with the grippli.

Civilization and Culture

History

The cueyatl are a similar species to the Grippli, but their traditions are more warlike. They were a minor species for thousands of years until the Yuan-Ti and Lizardmen of The Scales of the Abyss when they invades much of the eastern continent. Rather than be enslaved like the Grippli, the cueyatl instead helped the lizardmen with scouting the local jungles for additional sapient creatures they could capture for the Yuan-Ti. This made them a defacto member of the Scales, though they were never officially added to their ranks, and none were allowed in The Serpent Jungle.
The cueyatl flourished during this time, and helped the lizardmen oppress the grippli, making them rival species forever going forward. When the Yuan-Ti empire fell in 208 ANW, the cueyatl found themselves without any protection, and they broke up into separate tribes through the Prismatic Grove. Some decided that leaving the grove was the best way to escape the situation, so they traveled far to the western continent and settled in the The Sleeping Mire.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Many of the more warrior tradition tribes have a strong hatred for the grippli due to their expansion after the fall of the Yuan-Ti empire. They continue this rivalry to this day, though the tribes on the western continent long ago forgot this hatred.
Within the Sleeping Mire though, these cueyatl have developed a new rivalry with the local Otterfolk. The two species fight for control of territory and generally do not get along.
