Wailing Isle Prison

The Wailing Isle Prison sits isolated in the middle of the wide and cold river Staya, in the heart of Starigrad, and is accessible only by boat.
The complex is made up of several grim and imposing buildings, including the prison halls themselves, the mess hall, barracks for the guards, and administrative offices. The gray stone walls and towering watchtowers give the impression of a fortress, and indeed, it is a fortress against the inmates, the elements, and the supernatural forces rumored to haunt the place.   Inside the prison halls, the atmosphere is even more oppressive. The air is thick with the stench of sweat and filth, and the sounds of prisoners' moans, cries, and screams echo off the stone walls. The inmates are confined to cramped, dirty cells, with little light and no privacy. The guards, clad in steel armor, patrol the halls, their eyes ever-watchful for signs of unrest.
But perhaps the most unsettling aspect of Wailing Isle prison is the haunting. Over the prison's long history, countless prisoners have died within its walls, due to malnourishment, disease, fighting, murder, or torture, their souls left to wander the halls and corridors, seeking revenge on the living. It is said that on quiet nights, the mournful wails and screams of these restless spirits can be heard echoing across the river, giving the prison its eerie name.   Despite its reputation as a place of torment and despair, the Wailing Isle prison remains a necessary evil in the eyes of the authorities. In this city where crime and insanity run rampant, there must be a place to lock away the worst offenders, and the Wailing Isle prison is that place. But for those who are unlucky enough to be sent there, it is a fate worse than death.
