Invisibility

Invisibility is a theoretical spell in the illusion class. The spell, in theory, should be possible, but practically it seems as though it is near impossible to actually get it to manifest in a desirable effect. Despite that no one is known to have ever truly cast it, many institutions such as Sacramento University of Constructed Magic Applications include the spell in magic grouping charts, and have research teams into attempting to develop such as spell and technology using it.

Effect

The desired effect is to make a person, object, or area invisible, such so that they blend completely into their surroundings with no one the wiser of the target being there. No full successes have ever been recorded.

Manifestation

Only botched attempts are known, as all have failed to produce a true invisibility effect. There have been partial successes, though, they are few and far between, often only working in highly specific scenarios, if at all. Such botched attempts often manifest with one or more of the below failure states:
  • Only one plane of a target is made invisible from one angle. All others are visible.
  • Nothing is made invisible, but instead transpose what's in back of it on to the target.
  • The same as the above, but only from the caster's static point of view at time of the cast.
  • Only patches of an object appear to (briefly) become invisible.
  • Casts on living beings (of any kind) only do so on a surface level, visibly exposing organs and tissues.
  • Particular to vampires if the target of the spell, any magic or sunblocks are negated by the spell, causing burns if used in sunlight.
  • Target (briefly) becomes invisible or partially invisible, but still casts a shadow.
  • Target becomes briefly invisible, but has a distortion around it.
  • Target briefly becomes invisible, but only when not in motion.
  • Target briefly becomes invisible, but only when those viewing it are not in motion.
  • Sustained invisibility is achieved for a short period, however, spell residue is still massively detected, negating any practical use of the spell.
  • Invisibility is achieved only when in the same exact light conditions. Any changes in light or atmosphere interference leaves the spell obvious.
  • Brief invisibility occurs, however, the target is discolored, burned, or damaged severely.
  • The spell demands too much fuel to even finish being cast.
  • Target becomes invisible, but for the duration of the cast, there is a loud, shrill hum emitted from the target.
All of the above failure states are but a small sample of those recorded, and often through different methods of producing an invisibility cast. Combining different methods to attempt to negate and cancel out failure states almost always produces both failure states at once, if not creating new states of failure.
