Due to the extreme stress on the ship's engines and having been pushed far beyond its operating limits, the Temple of the Crane breaks down upon its arrival in Shanai. It is repurposed for shelter on the islands, and Soliairs named The Bamboo as their temporary lead ship in their fleet in its place.

The Temple of the Crane, a repurposed battleship captured by Soliairs Taeyang, was pushed far beyond its normal operating capacity in order to reach the Shanin Islands as fast as possible in response to the volcanic eruptions in the Pacific.   Ordinarily, the ship has a maximum speed of 35 knots, though it cannot be sustained for long due to the ship's massive size and how such high speeds limit its maneuverability, creating a dangerous environment around it. Such speeds typically are reserved only for deep ocean travel when other ships are far out of the way while outside of passenger or cargo lanes to prevent collisions. The ship's engines also cannot sustain that speed without risking massive overheating and mechanical stress on their parts, fuel lines, and draining too much fuel at once, leaving other systems vulnerable to failure.   Reportedly, The Temple of the Crane reached a top sustained speed of 42 knots, kept for 35 hours straight through choppy seas, shipping and passenger lanes, and with extreme risk of collision with roofs and newly rising volcanic islands across the Pacific Ocean. The Temple managed this by turning off all unnecessary systems- heat and hot water were kept at the minimum while still within the frozen northern portions of the Pacific Ocean and turned off entirely once within a sustainable temperature. Rations to crew were cut in order to have food on hand for survivors in Shanai upon arrival as well as converting mess halls, armories, break rooms, and living quarters into triage centers and cots for survivors. Many of   The Temple's weapons systems were also shut down when the ship was no longer in a range where it was likely to come under attack by the lunar flight, according to many among the crew, taking a massive risk in prioritizing speed over offense. Reportedly, many crew members and engineers were on hand in case of attack to turn the systems back on if needed, but under strict orders only to do so if The Temple could not outrun attackers or secondary ships within the fleet could not handle them.
