Chapter 4: The Maid & The Bastard Report
General Summary
The day after the kelpie attack, members of the party take care of their individual items of business: Dominic responds to the Brewwicks, Oliver writes to Malcom Thornhill about hiring more security and discusses code words with his valet Charles, Nicholas paints a beautiful seascape as a gift for Emily Frost. Oliver meets Alice at the pool and they speak about events, while Dominic meets Nicholas in the gardens to argue over what the roles of himself, Elinor, and Nicholas are meant to be in the family.
Oliver calls a meeting of the party plus Lord Spudnic Sterling. While waiting for Nicholas to show, Elinor and Dove each apologize for the previous days events and perhaps forge the beginning of a friendship. The meeting begins, happening in two parts: one part convincing Lord Spudnic to help blackmail the Frosts into supporting the bank, and one part deciding what to do next now that Spudnic has left the room and they can all talk freely. It is decided that Dove will soon become a lady’s companion to Elinor with the help of some sort of title inheritance from a long lost invented relative, and Oliver vows that House Sterling will keep her safe. They discuss the upcoming season and make plans for the Brewwick and Blumette meetings. Elinor, Nicholas, and Dominic bicker. Overwhelmed with it all, Dove becomes inebriated.
After the meeting, Oliver gives Elinor some gifts, along with words of support should she ever be chosen to be heir of the family, which Elinor all but brushes off. Davinor appears in spectral form to tease Elinor, much to her consternation.
Nicholas pulls Dove aside to ask about Elinor and also to make sure she doesn’t spread word about the Frost affair to anyone else — a conversation abruptly ended by another spectral form bursting through Nicholas’s face to scare Dove. Nicholas covers for Dove, who then drunkenly causes some frog-related mischief in Emma Parsons’ room and finds nothing immediately implicating her as the Frost family’s spy. She then falls asleep while attending to her duties in Elinor’s room, to be woken by Elinor some time later. Elinor assures Dove that should her presence become dangerous to the family, she would let her know. They each retire for the night.
Meanwhile, Dominic finishes dinner and then finds his frail grandmother wandering the estate. Isabel, in her elderly state, mistakes Dominic for her late son Jareth, and let slip her knowledge on Nicholas’s illegitimate lineage. Nicholas, after an evening of practicing his ice magic, overhears the tail end of the conversation between Dominic and Isobel, and immediately runs to his mother Nicole. The two argue over Dominic’s intentions with this new information, and Nicholas confronts his mother about growing up with the burden of being heir. In an attempt to wound his mother, Nicholas spits out one final sentence as Nicole is walking away: “By the way, Mother, Dove saw you with Lord Frost 18 years ago.” Nicole decides to make a drastic move.
Nicole approaches Dominic in his bedroom. He also laments his feelings about her manipulation of himself and Nicholas, and states his intentions of becoming the heir. Enraged, Nicole casts Enhance Ability on herself and throws herself out the window.
Oliver, who has been contentedly sleeping in his room, is awoken by his mysterious patron via frog messenger. He is the first to find his sister-in-law’s body.
