Ruth was the mistress of Lord Ivon Ashton, The Marquess of Ashton, for many years whilst in service to the Ashton family. She is the mother of Lord Flint Ashton, and was one of the main Housekeepers. When Ruth told him she was pregnant with his child, Lord Ivon had this painting made of Ruth, dressed in fine clothes, for him to have and as an experiential gift to her. Shortly after she gave birth, their sordid relationship was exposed, and Lord Ivon's mother- the Dowager Marchioness of Ashton, threw Ruth out of their service. She received a small purse of money from Lord Ashton, and was forbidden to return. She was never seen again.
