House di Floranna

A house composed of former Dead Sea Collective pirates. These "reformed pirates" used their ill-begotten gains to set themselves up as a major newcomer in Republic Politics in the late 1700s. They were credited with exposing house Vallentinia during the North Sea Trade Bubble. The family was credited with the economic recovery of the republic in the decades after, and holds a prominent position in the republic today. They have a position on the Council of Ten.   House di Floranna was for a long time the most elevated of all the houses, however the shift in power following the introduction of magic into society has seen their position decline markedly. Unlike all the other houses the Di Florannas refused to hire mages for retainers, or to have any dealings with magic at all. This and other developments, for instance the rise of the House di Valletta , have undermined the power of House di Floranna.

Public Agenda

House Floranna is the most politically powerful house in the Republic. They seek to maintain this position for the forseeable future. As such the family's first concern is to maintain members of the family in all the most powerful institutions of the Republic. There are members or clients of the House in the Senate, and on the Council. The Mayor of Apex is a member of the House, and the Doge himself. Floranna is seen as an arrogant House, who considers no other House their equal or rival.

Assets

Their initial assets were riches acquired during their pirating days. How much of this remains is unknown. They own a large mercantile fleet, grand estates in most Republic cities and towns, and some land holdings. They are not believed to be the wealthiest of all houses, but they are well connected.

History

Once a clan of Dead Sea Collective raiders in possession of an Ark. They became fabelously rich to the point they began to have more trouble with other members of the collective than with the targets of their raids. In the mid 18th century they took an offer of amnesty from Apex and soon became a prominent family there. They uncovered the scam behind the North Sea Company and ruined House di Vallentinia reputation. They attained the position of Doge in the aftermath and deftly solved the financial crisis that followed the collapse of the North Sea Bubble. They did this using innovative economic theory and lots and lots of money. Since then they have been the primary political force in the Republic.
