Pulau Makau

The Pulau Makau is the unifying text of the state religion of the Kahala Empire. It was compiled on the direction of Tohuna Otahani, founder and first ruler of the empire. It contains the orthodox and approved text concerning Ila'Makau, his exploits, the proper means of worship and religious laws of Kahala'i society.

The original document, possibly the holiest of all Kahala'i artifacts, lies in the great temple of Ila Makau atop the holy mountain, Ila'Maunga. Each of the mountain's 9,242 enchanted steps' to the temple are carved on their vertical face with a verse of the Pulau Makau. It is the duty of all adult Kahala'i to at least once in their life make pilgrimage and climb the steps, chanting aloud the verse of a step before they place their foot upon it.

Copying and distributing copies of the holy text are one of the responsiblities of the Tohuna caste, a duty relegated to the lesser echelons of the caste. Many copies are produced, but the secrets of their quick reproduction are closely guarded. Their are rumors though that they are accomplished with a highly advanced semiotic construct.
