Upon arriving in Feyreach, Shin and Mex decide to part ways temporarily. Shin seeks his old temple in an effort to mourn the death of Shirai. Mex seeks James in an effort to rid himself of The Book of the Leviathan.

Shin He leaves Feyreach for the Temple of Ascension. On the way, he meets Cody (an escaped convict from Phywell). Instead of continuing on to his destroyed temple, he escorts Cody to Crystmas to give him a home and work to do. On the way there, Shin is greeted with a vision of Warty, defender of the Feywild. Warty tries to sway Shin off his course because he's interfering with the natural order of things. Shin interprets this vision as the powers that be telling him to use the Satsui for good. At Crystmas, Shin learns that the memorial is about finished, but the walls need reinforcing. Shin makes his rounds by checking in on everyone. He also has a meeting with Karl, the former bandit. He's turned to Ixam and Zoran (God of Life) after the death of Stones. He informs Shin that Ixam is on a crusade against the new wave of demons, and against the false prophet known as Allak. He also tells Shin that Feron has been destroyed, its population purged. Shin agrees to meet with Ixam peaceably to discuss a possible alliance: Allak remains untouched so that Shin may kill him, and Shin tells them the source of the demons. While awaiting a negotiator from Ixam, Shin and his guard get to work on expanding the town. Shin makes ballistae and intends on reinforcing the walls with stone.   Mex (and James) Mex meets up with James in Feyreach. James reveals that he found the 2nd Book of the Leviathan while they were away. Mex, wanting the voices to stop, gives James the final book. They both start the journey to Crystmas in order to regroup with Shin by buying a horse and cart. On the way there, James learns of the further increased Fey and Demon presence. It seems like it's turned into nightly attacks.
