Zhalsuth's efforts are redirected into saving himself, rather than his people. He succeeds, making him one of the few mortal beings to survive the great collision.

Zhaluth spends the last days of the era developing defense magic. When the time comes, he uses every reserve of his magic to protect himself and Elryn. But it wasn't enough. The collision happens and the shockwave tears through his magic. Zhalsuth's only reason for surviving comes from the gift he's had since birth. Zhalsuth's ability to take from another's latent power kicks in to an extreme effect. He accidentally drains Elryn's life force entirely, allowing him to live.
