Bathyspheres

The Spheres were created when the The Bright King sacrificed his own body to create homes for humanity in the Shattered Sea. The first bathysphere thought to be have been created is Hallow, the religious center of the world of Ripple. Attached to the ocean floor by The Chains, the Spheres have been a constant in Ripple. Humanity has spread its way throughout outwards from Hallow over the centuries resulting in the colonization of many a sphere, although a fair number still remain uncolonized. Because of the isolated nature of the spheres it is not uncommon for individual bathyspheres to have their own unique culture different then those of their fellow spheres, even in the same country.
The Bathyspheres are seen as holy objects by The Church of the Spark, and for most of the world the same applies. In regions where the Church is prominent and even in areas where they are not, The Church of the Spark is responsible for the repair and maintenance on the Spheres. They teach that the Spheres are not to be tampered with as doing so would claim that The Bright King made a mistake, and it is not the everyday people's place to correct a God. In cases where the local church cannot repair the Sphere, then a Silent Minister is called in from Hallow (see The Church of the Spark. In regions where the Church holds little sway modification and repairs on the bathyspheres are much more commonplace. The two most likely places to find modified bathyspheres are in the Summerset Collective and the Umber Reaches.
Despite being created by a God the spheres are not infallible and indeed is is not unheard of for some key part of a sphere to fail, resulting in the evacuation and abandonment of the sphere in question. To the north lies the Minefield where numerous bathyspheres lie destroyed or in disrepair.
