Helms

Helms are the most ubiquitous form of propulsion used in Wildspace. The Arcane have a monopoly on selling helms, and they maintain offices in every major enclave where they make the process of purchasing easy. The creation of a helm is a closely guarded secret, no one has yet in the millennia of their use figured out how to replicate their construction, and even the ritual Invest Limited Helm that creates a temporary emergency helm sheds no light on their operation. The Arcane work to keep helms off the black market, both by making it known they will pay a premium for a returned helm as well as the uncanny disappearance of anyone attempting to move an illicit helm. Even without this suspicions activity, no one wants to make the enmity of the Arcane or be black listed from their wares, so most merchants refuse to buy a salvaged helm.

System

  • Each helm must be permanently attached to a ship to function.
  • A ship can have more than one helm installed as a backup, but only one can be active at a time.
  • Helms cannot be installed on a ship that uses any of the other magical propulsion methods; except a Gnomish Helm.
  • Helms have a maximum Speed rating and a Size rating.
    • The Size Rating details the maximum size ship you can loft with that helm measured in.
    • Speed Rating is the number of hexes your ship moves each turn in tactical movement (contingent on the level of spell you fed the Helm).
Each ship size category is detailed below containing a line for each speed rating available for that size.

Behind the Curtain

Original 2e material had 2 helms, Minor for 100k that gave Speed at 1/3 your Caster Level at a cost of all your daily spells or a Major for 200k that gave Speed at 1/2 your Caster Level for all your daily Spells. Both the gold cost and the eating of all your daily spells would not work for for a game.
PF2 has a speed for each vehicle, but that didn't fit the theme of Spelljammer. Looked for some HB, and found This 3e HB. It broke the helm into different speed and lift ratings to spread out the cost and make them accessible.
Converted them to Pf2e rules. The Drive/Jam action can x3 the speed, so reduced to 5 speed levels.
Based the Cost off the Max magic Item cost for Level.
Based the Level off a Lift 3 ship (40t is a good average), then what level characters would have access to a spell of the right rank to power the speed rating, then adjusted 1/- 1 for each Lift band.
Edit:
Converting the ship rules to the Starfinder model. Changed from a breakdown based off of tonnage to a size based one like SF. For the BP cost, I raised the amount a bit from the comperable thrusters in SF, so that it worked better w/ the level based pricing from before.
