Black mountain

The Black Mountain is the largest active volcano in all the known world, and it has been in a state of constant eruption since the Age of Blood.   The Black Mountain was long known to the peoples of the Atarsid Isles, with its eruptions being feared by sailors in the region; however, it was little more than a footnote in the history of Runetalras.   The Black Mountain became infamous at the dawn of the Age of Blood, where it burst into a violent and continuous eruption which has lasted to this day. The violence of the eruption obliterated a section of the volcano and rained down deadly debris upon the Atarsid Isles, and caused an era of darker skies. The eruption of the Mountain also spelt disaster for the Kingdom of Makthoria, which was still rebuilding from the Darkquake, its subterranean kingdom was hit with earthquakes and flooded with magma almost wiping the Kingdom and its people from Runetalras - a tale which is best heard in the 'A Lament of the Mithril Halls'. Finally, the nature of the Black Mountain has corrupted the seas around it, this has been so extensive that the waters surrounding the Black Mountain have become known as the Sulphur Sea. The Sulphur Sea is tainted by toxic gases from the Black Mountain and in places its temperature reaches boiling point.   None can truly claim to know why the Black Mountain is in its state of constant eruption, but there are several theories. The first three theories content that as the Age of Blood dawned the Black Mountain was connected to another plane of existence, these theories differ upon which plane the Mountain is connected to, one contents it is connected to the Abyss, another the Nine Hells, and the final the Elemental Plane of Fire. Another theory argues that a powerful creature from one of the aforementioned planes was sealed beneath the Black Mountain and powers it to this day. The final theory puts forward that the arcane lay lines which cross Runetalras were sent into disarray with the Age of Blood and caused an ongoing arcane disaster within the Black Mountain.
