Atlesian Military

The Atlesian Military is the largest military force in Remnant and is tasked with the defense of the Kingdom of Atlas and its overseas interests. The Atlesian military is highly trained and highly mechanized, though it still boasts the largest personnel count of any military as well as the largest budget and the widest reach. It is largely integrated with Atlas Academy, around which the entire Atlesian government is based, and is historically unique for its technological sophistication and wide employment of Huntsmen.

Structure

The head of the Atlesian Military holds the rank of General and holds a seat on the 5 man governing Council of Atlas. Reporting to him are the commanding officers of the various Infantry Corps, the various Admirals of the Airfleets, and the Commander of the Special Operatives Unit.   As a general rule, the military is modular; smaller units are combined to create larger units and every unit is able to be deployed independently for a force appropriate response or joined together in a unified and delineated command. A squad, for example, is composed of two fireteams, with the junior squad leader being a corporal and the senior squad leader being a sergeant. 5 squads make a platoon, and the most senior of the sergeants also acts as the executive officer (XO) to the commanding officer (CO) of the platoon. A platoon is usually lead by a 2nd lieutenant but 4 platoons form a company and the most senior lieutenant is designated 1st lieutenant and acts as the XO to the leader of the company, which is usually a captain, but the senior most company commander in a brigade is... and so on.

Atlesian Infantry Units

While units vary in exact size due to mission demands and casualties, the standard unit configuration of Atlesian Infanty is
Unit Composition Headcount Commander
Corps 2+ divisions >7200 men Lieutenant General
Division 3+ brigades >3600 men Major General
Brigade 4-6 companies 800-1200 men Lt. Colonel or Colonel
Company 4 platoons 200 Captain or Major
Platoon 5 squads 50 2nd or 1st Lieutenant
Squad 2 Fireteams 10 Sergeant
Fireteam 5 soldiers 5 Corporal or Sergeant
Corps and Divisions are rarely deployed in peacetime and are primarily administrative units. Prominent examples of active Corps today include
  • The Home Corps (responsible for the defense of Atlas and Mantle)
  • The Engineering Corps (responsible for the construction and maintenance of military infrastructure)
  • The Expeditionary Corps (complements the air fleet and acts as mobile infantry outside the Kingdom)
  • The Administrative Corps (Mostly aged veterans and officers tasked with managing the wider military bureaucracy)
Brigades and Companies are more commonly deployed for engagements and missions. A Flying Fortress usually carries a complement of a single company and a Battlegroup of 4 Flying Fortresses carry a brigade- it is extraordinarily rare for forces larger than a brigade to be deployed to the same location.   Brigades are assigned a unique number and a descriptor, often deriving from their Corps but sometimes deriving from more unique and localized role. Examples include
  • The 9th Peacekeeping Brigade
  • The 16th Defense Brigade
  • The 24th Administrative Brigade
  • The 43rd Engineering Brigade
  • The 77th Expeditionary Brigade
  • The 101st Special Brigade
  • The 105th Special Brigade
  • The 112th Expeditionary Brigade
Companies are named after various letters of the alphabet. No company in a brigade can share a letter, but given that a standard brigade will have between 4-6 companies that still leaves a great deal of potential options - the chosen letters do not have to be in alphabetical order. Furthermore, company nicknames are not fully standardized- any word 1-3 syllable word that begins with the appropriate sound is acceptable, and in a highly regimented structure the selection of semi-unique monikers for the largest unit where most soldiers know each other by face is one of the few creative and personalizing elements. Nonetheless, there are often repeats. "Atom, Able, Argent, Arrow, Bravo, Baker, Charlie, Castle, Dust, Elder, Easy, Sword, Shield" are all used in at least 5 different brigades.   Many brigades try to theme their company names, and since all company names must be approved by command a few units have been granted de facto monopolies. The companies of the 101st Special Brigade are named after letters of an ancient alphabet and the 105th's companies are named for the four Huntsmen Academies and Atlas's two Primary Combat Schools. This is particularly useful given that these companies are well known and deployed independently. No matter how many 'A' companies are created, there will only ever be one 'Alpha Company'.   Platoons within a company are also uniformly specialized. In an expeditionary company, for example, three combat platoons will be joined by a fourth support platoon, which is composed not of rifleman but pilots, medics, technicians and other logistical staff.

Airfleet Structure

The Atlesian Air Fleet is built around the Flying Fortress Capital Ship and its various formations, though individual dropships and small groups can act autonomously, and some, like the Manta, are designed precisely for that role. Minor outposts may be built around and supported by a single squadron of ships. While designs differ, Atlesian air doctrine is built around all purpose ships which can function as dropships, gunboats, air support, fighters, etc.
Unit Contains
Fleet 2+ Battle Groups
Battle Group 4 Flying Fortresses
Flying Fortress 45 Dropships (9-15 squadrons)
Squadron 3-5 Dropships
Dropship ~10 infantry/cargo
In addition to their infantry complement, airships have crew and support staff numbering in the hundreds, separated into departments corresponding to the various needs and systems of the ship. Flying Fortresses act as long term mobile bases, which can go to areas of conflict and avoid trouble easily. Outposts have been established in the badlands, few and far between, to resupply traveling Flying Fortresses and long range drop ships and ensure Atlas can rapidly deploy forces anywhere in the globe.

Special Operatives Unit

Atlesian Special Operatives Unit   The Atlesian Special Operatives Unit is composed of licensed Huntsmen commissioned as officers in the Atlesian Military. They often act as a rapid response force, and engage in intelligence gathering, counterterrorism and black ops. Precise figures are unknown, but press reports and foreign intelligence suggest a stable membership of roughly 100 specialists at any given time, making the unit the single largest employer of Huntsmen on Remnant.

Culture

The Atlesian Military is highly regimented and places a strict emphasis on discipline, often over individuality. In the aftermath of the Vytal Treaty and its political and cultural reforms, this strikes much of Remnant as odd and unsettling, but it has allowed for Atlesian Soldiers to become the finest conventional ground forces on the planet.

Public Agenda

The protection of Atlas, her overseas interests and allied Kingdoms and villages, from the continual assault of the Grimm and the raids of bandits, terrorists and domestic criminals.

History

The Atlesian Military was formed out of the ashes of the Kingdom of Mantle as part of the 'Atlesian Miracle', around the cultural and economic boom that shifted the political center of gravity away from the old city of Mantle to its new floating citadel, Atlas (formerly Alsius Academy). The government of Atlas collaborated closely with the Huntsman Association and turned its Academy into a center for technological research and development. Atlas, like Mantle, was geographically isolated and dependent upon foreign trade for much of its food and material, and while the new Kingdom of Atlas was careful to preserve peaceful relations with its partners, offering some of its technological breakthroughs such as the CCCT's pro bono to the world, it was determined to protect its trade routes from Grimm and bandits. The martial and bellicose nature of the old Mantle had not been completely erased, and while some critics feared a disastrous return to form and corruption of the neutral Huntsman Academy the northern Kingdom had finally found its footing.    Atlas would be the primary contributor to the Kingdom's joint war effort during the Faunus Rights Revolution and suffered massive casualties, most notably at the Battle of Fort Castle. Their dominance position in the coalition and comparatively high civilian, property and military losses in the conflict reaffirmed their commitment to military ascendency, though in the aftermath of the sea blockades of the war and loss of manpower Atlesian Doctrine would increasingly emphasize air power and mechanized units.
