Suraphan
A town that functions as a giant trade post at the center of Southeast Samarya, known for connecting the major routes of the east to the west.
Demographics
Suraphan primarily consists of merchants and adventurers from all over Samarya. There are said to be more inns in Suraphan alone than in all of eastern Samarya combined.
Government
Suraphan is a merchant republic, governed by the guild known as the United Traders of Southeast Samarya. Voting power is distributed among a set number of Rank 1, 2, and 3 franchise owners.
Defences
UTSS hires new adventurers every season to guard the city's outer concrete walls. The constant rotation of guardsmen ensures no one gets too knowledgeable of the city's inner defenses. Plenty of merchants also hire their own protection. Should an invasion of Suraphan occur, it would likely be every person for themselves.
Industry & Trade
UTSS collects sales tax (5%) on every (legal) transaction, as well as lodging and property taxes. In particular, high property taxes for permanent homes prevents individuals from occupying unreasonably large amounts of land in a city that depends heavily on mobile traffic. Said taxes are used to maintain infrastructure.
Districts
Suraphan is arranged in a circular fashion, with encircling and radial roads dividing the city into sectors. Each sector of the city contains merchants and craftsmen of a different profession. The busiest sectors include Blacksmith's Alley, Weaver's Square, and Grub Lane.
Guilds and Factions
Though UTSS unites tradesmen from a variety of fields, sectors tend to squabble among each other and among themselves.
Architecture
Because most residents are temporary, Suraphan is primarily filled with apartment-style inns. Even permanent residents prefer to rent rooms over purchasing homes. These inns are primarily built with steel imported from the Jinlur Mountains, as steel-based homes do not catch fire as easily, and handle the hot, rainy jungle climate better than wood-based ones.
Roads are paved with concrete, and carriages/horses/other vehicles are restricted to the encircling roads.
Geography
Suraphan is located in the middle of the Jangalee Forest, one few settlements to be so due to the many monsters and deadly plants living within.
