This headpiece is quite interesting indeed! It acts somewhat like an aetheric whirlpool, drawing in energy from all around and using it to bolster the wearer with mystical energies while dispersing the force of incoming strikes. This magical push-and-pull does has the unfortunate downside, however, of attracting those same attacks that it would seek to turn away. As such, while incoming blows will likely lack their usual punch, you should be wary that they may well find purchase all the more often!
