Fortitude
Fortitude is the heart of civilization. The city of manufacturing and production. Ruled by a governor in a democractic system of checks and balances, although in recent days there is concern of rising corporate power. The peoples of Fortitude have a strong connection to humanitarianism and the working class.
Demographics
Fortitude proudly hosts all known races of Saol. The only requirement of being a citizen of the great city of innovation is desire to see humanity progress. Denizens of Fortitude generally worship Alstarius (The Golden Father) - God of Civilization, Achievement and the Sun. Close to the element of fire.
Government
Fortitude is overseen by a Governor elected every 5 years. The city also has a system of judges and lawmakers that ensure no single entity has unlimited power of the others. Byron Harper, famous industrialist and inventor is the current governor. The government also consists of the collective of lawmakers, the high and low courts and the people's council, all to ensure Fortitude is a city for the people and by the people. A purposely complex system, with the intention of keeping policy making in the hands of the policy makers. This has led to an overwhelming influence of corporate interests. Especially in that of Artemis Gold and Vanguard Industries who many say are the true rulers of Fortitude.
Defences
Due to recent surge in arcane technology, Fortitude has surpassed even Diligence in its military might. Many of the soldiers are outfitted with strange and powerful arcane weaponry and the legions of Warforged make Fortitude a powerhouse in raw strength. Fortitude is also ripe with mercenaries and adventurers whose operational contracts allow them to be conscripted should the need ever arise.
The Fortitude Defense Force
The Fortitude Military is comprised of two main divisions.The Fortitude Defense Force and Fortitude Intelligence Agency. The Fortitude Defense Force oversees the various forward facing military entities such as the army, the navy, the artillery, and the Fortitude Defense Grid. The current High General of the Fortitude Defense Force is a dwarven warrior relocated from Ironside named Brom Oaksbane.Fortitude Intelligence Agency
The Fortitude Intelligence Agency works behind the scenes via a network of spies, agents, officers and detectives. They handle the covert operations and identify foreign and domestic threats. The current Director of the Fortitude Defense Force is a half-elf chronomancer named Xystress Voss.Districts
The Electrum District
The Electrum District is a quasi-public district in that it is mainly the home of government buildings and headquarters for the military and enforcement agencies. Brutalism architecture and an air of seriousness makes this district stand in stark contrast the magic and whimsy of the rest of fortitude. Tall buildings of steel and stone impose the same fear as the ancient dwarven halls that once existed below.The Gold District
Home to the famous Gold Mansion and the Mint Museum, the Gold District is an elite commercial district home to the most elaborate and expensive shops and boutiques in all of Saol, let alone Fortitude. The Gold District stands in stark contrast to the working class and poor residential areas in Fortitude separated by a single massive wall. Because of the wealth needed to operate in this district, the ever present Artemis Gold keeps a watchful eye on all of its comings and goings. For adventurers for unparalled skill and loose morals it is a haven for some of the best job opportunities in Saol.The Silver District
The largest and most welcoming area of Fortitude is the Silver District. Home to hundreds of shops, amusements and tourist destinations, the Silver District shines as the face of Fortitude. Although not the largest population of Fortitude, the Silver District is home to many of the cities middle to upper-middle class citizens. The front facing side of Vanguard Industries also exists in the Silver District. For adventurers of some renown, The Silver District is a haven for guilds, businesses, bounties and opportunity. Home to the one of the larger divisions of the Fighters Guild, Adventurers Guild and Arcane Collective there is never a shortage of work.The Copper District
Home to Fortitudes working class, the thousands of factory workers and laborers call these tight stacked apartments home. There is some commercial buildings in the Copper District, mainly for your basic arms and armor, tools and equipment, and a constant flow of alchohol (thanks largely to the major dwarven influence) to get these workers through the day. The Copper District is also home to many of the factories and industrial workplaces including the factory floor of Vanguard Industries.The Brick
The underbelly of Fortitude is a large section of city called the Brick, home to the cities poor and forgotten, it is a rough and hard place. Whispers of guilds and factions of ill-repute carry from the Brick.Guilds and Factions
A Metropolis of Many
Fortitude due to its sheer size and welcoming spirit is home to hundreds of guilds and organizations. National organizations such as The Arcane Collective, The Fighters Guild, The Order of Adventurers and The Thieves Guild all have a place here. Even The Crimson Order is said to have presence in the cities underbelly.The Johan Burgesson Center of Industry
The Johan Burgesson Center of Industry is named after the inventor of the first entity of arcane and mechanical nature, an Autognome named David. The center is a collective of the most brilliant and forward thinking minds of the age. With eyes ever on the horizon, the industrialists believe the way forward for mankind is innovation, creation and automation. The Center is split until mutiple sub-division including Burgesson University, the premier college of Fortitude and The Order of Industry Wizards Collective, an agency that promotes the blending of magic and science.Vanguard Corporation
Headed by the immortal high elf Artemis Gold, the Vanguard Corportation is the only commericial automated manufacturer of magical items in Saol. A massive factory located in the heart of fortitude, Vanguard also provides jobs for nearly 1,000 Saolans. There is fierce debate in the Saolan world over the ethics of such a corporation which ignores the skills and passion the craftsemen of Saol are famous for and replaces that spirit with corporate efficiency.History
The Time of Kings
Prior to the current democratic system governing Fortitude, the city was a well and true monarchy. Some generations this was beneficial to the city and for some it was not. The last King of Fortitude was a greedy elf named Jaspar Etherius. In the Year 199 A.S. Jaspar overextended his power and when he commanded his military to turn against its own people, but his generals instead turned against him. Lead by a human warrior named Draco Reighlus, Jaspar was defeated and executed childless. Draco was honored as a hero and offered the position of King; but he rejected rule of the city to instead establish the current system of government. Many in Fortitude still rile from the horrors of this short but bloody civil war.Points of interest
The Saolan Mint
On the most famous sites in Fortitude and also the most well hidden and well protected is the Saolan Mint. Controversially also overseen by the Gold family, the Saolan Mint produces the currency for the entire continent. Although some cities and countries will use their own forms of currency, the common currencies are produced here in four fashions. Copper, Silver and Gold and Electrum. The location of the mint is located deep underneath Fortitude and cannot be accessed by the public although a kitsch museum exists in the Gold District as a gaudy tourist trap.The Church of Alstarius
As founder of the city of Fortitude, its peoples have a strong connection to the God of Civilization. Publically, the church is righteous symbol of morality and working spirit, and injects itself into the daily lives of the citizens. However in recent years, conspiracies name the church as a tool for industry leaders to keep a tighter leash on the population. The church itself however, located in cities Silver District has become a symbol of wealth and glory for the city. Its massive size and status as a tourist destination stand in contrast to its meaning as a beacon for hard work and community.
