S04E10 - Divine Contention Report

  The Stormbreakers have been tasked by Dagult Neverember to find members of the Cult of Vecna that has recently picked up nefarious activity in the city and kidnapped important citizens.   Among others, these 4 have recently gone missing:  
  • Eldon Keyward is a highly knowledgeable scholar from the House of Knowledge.
  • Indrina Lamsensettle is a human actor who moves in Neverwinter’s highest social circles.
  • Sarcelle Malinosh is a human magic-user.
  • Umberto Noblin is a gnome historian.
    More Notes:  
  • The PCs traveled by ship from Leilon to Neverwinter and arrived without any major problems.
  • There has been a lot of discussion about what to do with their recently obtained warship. No consensus has been reached.
  • In Neverwinter, the PCs met briefly with Lord Neverember who explained that while cults pop up now an again, most of them are not a real threat to the city, but this Vecna cult is insidious. They have kidnapped citizens from different parts of the city and it seems they have no connections to each other.
 
  • Troubleshooters were hired to find out about this cult and see if they could rescue the kidnapped. Among those was Kevori Fearnehart and her brother. An ill fate found her brother, she told her story to the PCs, and he was found dead where she was set to meet him. He had in his dead hand a desiccated eyeball that was not his own. This eyeball, after a Detect Magic and Identify were cast upon it, was determined to be enchanted to lead a follower to where the cult's hideout is located. The command to engage the eye was, "Hail the Undying."
 
  • The party followed the eye into Neverdeath Graveyard to the mauloleum of the Hallix family.
 
The towering stone mausoleums in Neverdeath Graveyard cluster near the wall separating the Main Graveyard from the Pauper’s Graveyard to the west. Hallix Mausoleum is a squat, unassuming granite block in the shadow of larger monuments to the west and south. Its metal double door bears a rusty broken chain and a padlock that hangs off the door.
 
  • Zith ZinyraThey found the doors unlocked and recently used. Ozus cast his Thaumaturgy spell and pushed the door open.  The well-oiled door opened noiselessly. The crypt interior was dusty, with numerous tracks leading to a descending staircase at the rear of the room.
 
  • Against the walls rested six stone coffins, three on each side. A stone slab engraved with a name, birth year, and death year covered each coffin. Ozus was careful as he checked them out. These members of the Hallix family died forty years ago, after Mount Hotenow erupted. The coffins were empty except for scraps of cloth and bits of bone. Something else seemed to have gotten to the contents some time before.
 
  • While some were cautious about even entering, a couple of others surged ahead and down the stairs, stirring up trouble below.
 
Stone stairs descend from Hallix Mausoleum to a large subterranean chamber with stone coffins sitting on sturdy shelves. Part of the west wall has collapsed, creating an opening into another chamber. Marching around the chamber are five pale, desiccated warriors wearing wicked-looking armor.

  •  Ezra Battlestorm ran down the steps to turn the undead, affecting 2. One was slain before he could run, the other took off to the west.
  • Xaemarra Calaumystar ran up and down the steps a few times, skirmishing with the wights and recovering to safer spots.
  • Kanenas took to the front lines to help others and take out the wights.
  • Zith Zinyra let loose with spells and some arrows.
  • Ozus was feeling like their haste into the catacombs was quite dangerous, and wanted to err to caution, but he joined the others down the stairs as well. After 4 wights were dispatched, with the 5th well out of sight, the team caught their breath and gathered their wits. Zith Zinyra, eager to try a new spell, cast Wizard Eye and began to scout ahead through the nearby rooms with his invisible eye that moved through rooms that were open and accessible.
 
  • Together they defeated 4 of the 5. One had run away.
 
  • After the fight ended, the group caught their breath while Zith Zinyra eagerly cast Wizard Eye (first time!) to scout ahead. The Eye invible swept the room to every place it could reach.
 
  • To the west was the large chamber next door.
 
Roots protrude through cracks in the ceiling here. A stone stairway in the southeast corner has collapsed, and the nearby walls have crumbled. Three doors in the north wall are shut, and the middle door bears a new padlock. To the west, stairs lead to a small balcony that overlooks the room from five feet above, with just enough room for a door painted with an eye.
 
  • His magical eye was able to squeeze through a fracture in the door to the right, and it was able to see more within.
 
A metal grate in the floor of this ten-foot-square room blocks access to a shallow stone pit holding a small gold harp, a handful of loose papers, and a piece of bloody cloth.
 
  • To the south of the large chamber was another sizeable room.
 
Rusted pipes run along the walls and ceiling, and water flows from nozzles in the ceiling pipes. In the center of the room is a deep stone basin that’s set into the floor and filled to the brim. At the southwest corner of the room, past a door on the west wall is a small alcove with a closed door that is padlocked. One the east side of the room, there is a 5' alcove with a door, and a stair way down to another door.
