Isleton

Geography and Description

Isleton is a small town situated on an island in the river delta of the Altasirya River. It lies to the northwest of Port Karn, and almost due north of the town of Hearavgizan. There are two ways to access the town via boat (not including landing anywhere on the coastline): the main docks at Isleton Cove, and a secondary set of docks in Long Bay, on the eastern side of the island. Most of the island is jungle; but the area around the town itself is farmed fields, growing the staples and vegetables that the residents need to eat. There are roads connecting the docks to the town, which is about a half mile away from either of the docks. Around the town is a palisade wall, five meters high. In town, there is an inn, a tavern, a general store, and a barber. There was a town hall, and a temple. The market is simply an open area where people come to sell things two days per eightday. There is someone in town who knows smithing, but it’s a hobby, rather than a full time job. The eastern portion of the town is primarily residences.

The island (and town) of Isleton, showing its two ports, Isleton Cove and Long Bay   Isleton Cove and Long Bay each contain a group of warehouses and offices. Isleton Cove also has a small boat dry dock, for repairing the small craft that the islanders use. There are no residences at either of the dock areas. During the working hours, there are some food and drink vendors there as well.

Economics

Isleton is primarily self sufficient, at least where food is concerned; most of the townsfolk are farmers or fishers. They have few commercial buildings; an inn, a tavern, a general store, and a barber. All four buildings are along the central square, where, twice a week, a market is held. This is mainly foodstuffs, but also handcrafted goods are sold as well.

Notable Locations

The total population is around 2000 people, mainly Humans, although Orcs, Hobbits, and Goblins also live on the island.
The town itself
Isleton Tavern: The barkeep at the tavern is an older Human with greying muttonchops. They serve ale (usually a dark ale and a lighter ale) and a local whiskey distilled by Farmer Bob. There is also a person called Bob the Stabler (they are the two Bobs in town). They serve decent food.   Isleton Inn: Located two doors down from the tavern, past the barbershop. It has a single story with only four rooms, each with a pair of double beds. There is a common room has three tables, each with four chairs around them. A few other chairs are pushed against the walls. The innkeeper typically has a small keg of ale on hand, along with some bottles of the local whiskey for his guests. The inn is made of wood planks on a mortared river rock foundation, with a lapped plank roof.   Town Hall: Simple clapboard building of one story, about the same size as a residence. In the front office is one of Nathan’s sculptures (river grasses and fish, stained in various colors). A clerk is there during the day.   Cemetery: Located to the northwest, just outside of town. It has both stone and wood grave markers, as well as a couple of small family mausoleums.   The town has a local "Santa", named Nathan Verges, who is a woodworker who makes toys for the town's children, which he gives out during the Winter Solstice. He is also an ex-war mage, and a seeker of knowledge. Nathan is a hermit that lives out of town, to the Southwest. He has a small cabin, a barn for his cart, and a wood workshop. He doesn't like visitors much. Most people keep out of his hair. Even the kids avoid his place, if only to stay on his "nice list" when it comes to toys. But his main job is making custom wood furniture and art pieces.   The town also has a resident soap maker, Jenna Constantin. In front of her house is a carved wooden sign that says "Jenna's Soaps".   The local healer is Tekkilu Rikkuiwi, a Goblin woman who also is the closest thing to an alchemist the town has. She knows a few things about medicine, and potions of the healing variety.   Farmer Bob is a farmer who's hobby is distilling liquor. He is the source of the local whiskey, a below-average brew that gets the job done, but isn't anything worth exporting.   Johann Amherst is a traveling minstrel, who stayed at the the Isleton Inn during the "Marauder Scare". He has since moved on, continuing his travels all over the Empire.   Bob the Stabler is a farmer with extra room in his stabling barns. He rents stalls out to visitors who need them, and will care for their animals for a fee.   Maribel is a local housewife, and one of Nathan's customers.   Grisha Moonaxe, a local shaman, is the local leading authority on the shrines scattered about the islands.
On the island are several nests of strix, bloodsucking bird/bat creatures. They usually don't bother the townsfolk, as their nests aren't near the town. Howwever, they can attack people if their territories are entered.
Scattered about the surrounding islands are some old Orcish ruins, the remains of shrines dedicated to their gods. Most are not used any longer for their original purpose; however they are still used as meeting places and as places to party or enjoy some romantic time with a loved one.
The Altasirya River Delta had originally been settled by Orcs. They had been organized in clans and tribes, some as city states, but all in a loose confederation that would support each other if there were any outside threats. Unlike a single, large polity however, that mutual support wasn’t very strong, at least compared to the well disciplined and well trained soldiers from Araterre. Many places were sacred to their various gods, many of which were on the islands in the delta. Eight shrines still stood, the others having been washed away when the arms of the river changed their courses, erasing the islands where those shrines had been. The delta was always changing, although many of the larger islands had built up enough vegetation to protect them from getting washed away or eroded.

In the present day, few used them as shrines. Most used them as convenient meeting places and excuses to have parties out in the jungle. They were relatively easy to get to, but private enough so people usually didn’t get bothered when they were out there. They made convenient picnic spots for young lovers, as well.

Legal Considerations

Nothing much different from Port Karn.

Government

There is a small city council (volunteers, called upon when needed), that supports a mayor, an elected position that is chosen every two years.

Military

None, except for the local militia, which is simply however many volunteers they can round up from the local populace. They have a few dozen spears stored away, along with a dozen swords and shields, plus a collection of knives suitable for fighting. Many farmers, when called upon, bring pruning hooks, pitchforks, or other farming implements that could be used as a makeshift weapon.

Notable Factions

Guild representation is minimal. There just aren't enough people to have "factions", although there are a couple of families that could be considered "noble" in local terms. They aren't actually noble at all, but they are wealthier than the rest of the townsfolk, being "middle class" rather than "poor". One is the family that has run the tavern for several generations; another is the family of the innkeep, which has also run the business for several generations; the third is the leading fisherman's family, who've accumulated their wealth and power over several generations by taking advantage of some opportunities to buy warehouses by the docks.

Supporting Settlements

None. It is a supporting settlement itself.

Demographics

The total population is around 2000 people, mainly Humans, although Orcs, Hobbits, and Goblins also live on the island. Most are farmers or fishers, with a scattered few doing support roles.

Government

City council, made up of 3-6 volunteer council members, chosen every few years as needed. They convene as needed, usually monthly.

Defences

Palisade wall

Industry & Trade

No industry, except for occasional wood furniture or artwork, made by Nathan. The town exports some foodstuffs, mainly fish.

Infrastructure

One tavern. One inn. A barbershop, a general store, a building that passes for city hall. Roads are dirt, with boardwalks along the sides to keep mud down. There is a palisade wall, five meters high, all around the town, with scaffolding on the inside for defenders. There are several wells servicing the town.

Districts

There are three. There is the town proper, Isleton Cove, and Long Bay. Isleton Cove and Long Bay are basically just docks with some warehouses attached, although Isleton Cove also has repair facilities for boats.

Architecture

Most buildings are either wattle and daub houses with thatched roofs, or wood structures with thatch or plank roofs.

Geography

The town sits on the high point of the island, surrounded by farms, which are in turn surrounded by the jungle that makes up most of the island.

Climate

Warm and humid, like the Ganges delta in India.

Natural Resources

Fish.Wood. No mineral wealth to speak of.
