Kansujian: People of Note
Yuuna Moritaka
Born in LN 1263 as the first child of State Councilor Hojo Moritaka, Yuuna became heir presumptive for the title of Daitōryō when her uncle Tojo voluntarily renounced the title and her father acceded in LN 1278. While technically an elected position, leadership defaults to lineal succession when such circumstances arise between election years. As such, it follows that when Hojo was assassinated in LN 1279, Yuuna became the first female leader of Kansujian as well as the youngest person to ever take the title.
The induction of a young female leader was incredibly unpopular among the people, and the beginning of Yuuna's political career was fraught with difficulty; beset on all sides by detractors as she was. Through careful trial and error she was able to quickly figure out how to navigate the workings of Kansujian's government, and won re-election in LN 1282.
To this day Yuuna's most vocal critics claim the Council is nothing more than a puppet show, and that her position is the clearest evidence of that fact. Truthfully, they're quite correct: real power in the City of Lights does not lie with the government but rather in the hands of the Syndicates. Rumor has it that Daitōryō Moritaka seeks to put an end to this, but is so constrained and under constant surveillance by the Syndicates that she dare not make a move for fear of her own life.
Klaus Jansson
A direct descendant of Miro Jansson, the first Obermeister of the League, Klaus is well-known throughout Kansujian for his generosity and business acumen. Raised within the League, he is a world-class smith and artificer who has significantly broadened the reach and wealth of the League by making cross-Coast alliances with manufacturing consortiums in other city-states. He trained under his father, Albrecht Jansson, alongside Guilherme Vanista who went on to become the Master Artificer of Calava.
Klaus' greatest desire is for the League to reach total legitimacy in his lifetime. Utilizing the League's talents and resources for the massive overhaul of the Cloudraker District and the establishment of public attractions like the Albrecht Jansson Museum shows some outward progress toward that goal, but there are many in the organization who are strongly displeased with the idea of pledging their shared wealth to some nebulous "public good." There is, additionally, the binding nature of the Compact for Klaus to be concerned about.
Ichika Shintabe
Klaus Jansson's desire for lawful enterprise is the polar opposite of Ichika Shintabe's. Having seized leadership of the Subeturites by assassinating her own mother when she was just thirteen years old, she rules the Shintabe-ko with a cruel iron fist from her palatial estate build atop the All-Sellers' Market. The very definition of craven, Ichika personally appoints the Drivers who regularly torment slaves living in Southend and, as an accomplished thaumaturgist, oversees the deicite farm located under the district.
Shintabe is a sadistic megalomaniac who lavishly rewards loyalty and viciously punishes dissension. One of her first acts upon assuming leadership of the Subeturites was to systematically kill off all who would oppose her, including the entire cabinet of eunuchs her mother had assembled as advisors. Her skillful control of the syndicate has given her complete control over a faction of fanatically loyal subjects who have their fingers in all the business in and around Kansujian.
Kotagal S'hashi Kant
A New Pira native, Kotagal Kant emigrated to Kansujian with his family in LN 1243. Drafted into the ranks of the Gundan by his father, who exchanged his son's lifelong service for a position as warden of Suharto Prison, he took readily to his new lot in life. An exemplary warrior in every regard, Kotagal voluntarily refused promotion from the rank of Captain for twenty years to avoid becoming a field officer (i.e., to avoid a desk job). With the Gundan being one of only two "true" standing militaries in the Coast, his extensive experience with the workings of the legion and close ties with its officer corps led to his swift promotion to the rank of Commander of the Telas Gundan.
Sadly, decades of rulership over the syndicate have corrupted Kant's ideals. Once an honorable soldier, decades of indulgence have turned him into to a slovenly tyrant ruling from afar with little regard for what befalls the lower ranks. Breaking a thousand year-old tradition, he has taken up residence outside Fort Pira, surrounded by slaves and concubines. Despite any displeasure his subordinates may feel, his greed and willingness to commit any atrocity for coin has resulted in great financial prosperity for the syndicate - enough to make potential mutineers second-guess their own motivations.
