Kansujian: Places of Interest
Promenade District
The Promenade District is the oldest district in Kansujian, dating all the way back to the city's original founding in LN 57. As the first thing that tourists coming from the Territories see, it is conservatively designed and laid out compared to the rest of town with lots of parks and open space. Some of the oldest and most prestigious storefronts on the Coast are located here, and it also houses the Kansujian City Council and other administrative centers.
Kansujian Plaza
The busiest district in Kansujian, the Plaza takes the form of a large square boxed in by wide roads. Though it is the smallest district geographically, the Plaza is by far the most densely packed: as the place where visitors and tourists spend the majority of their time (and money), it is packed to the brim with accommodations and attractions.
Chief among the latter are the Unmei Zoo, where guests can marvel at a variety of exotic lifeforms from around the Sea, contained in magically climate-controlled pens; the famous Rika Tsukasa Theater where aspiring playwrights and composers from around the Coast dream of seeing their works performed; Fasching Park, a small campus which hosts an amusement park with a variety of entertainment-focused magical wonders on display; and the Blue Silk Casino, first and foremost among the dozen or so gambling parlors across Kansujian with five floors of the loudest, gaudiest, most lavish entertainment one could hope to find in the Coast.
Small exclusive hotels and mementos of every caliber can be found here, as well as shops and services eager to cater to guests' every need. Given its density, property values in the Plaza are restrictively high; it comes as no surprise that the majority of the permanent structures there are either owned by one of the three Syndicates or else corporations whose holdings are Coastwide in scale. Hegemon's Rest Going west from the Plaza one finds the Ravipur Botanical Gardens, which also serve as a courtyard to the famed Hegemon’s Rest Hot Springs. An entire resort complex has been built up around these springs, themselves sculpted and curated over the last thousand years into a dazzling array of terraced pools cut into the naturally blue stone at the riverside. These springs span the entire eastern riverbank between the Sunward and Starward bridges, and empty into the river to paint a steamy picture of paradise that guests can enjoy a stone’s throw away from an assortment of luxury mementos and upscale bars and lounges. While the Gardens are officially considered part of the Plaza district, the rest is unofficially recognized as its own district. Cloudraker District Across the river from the hot springs is the Cloudraker District (AKA ‘Little Alman’) so named for the extravagantly tall buildings erected by the Jansson family upon the raised cliff face overlooking the river. These buildings provide high-class residences and storefronts for the best of the Janssons’ artisans and producers. A haven for more distinguished visitors wishing to avoid the noise and extravagance of the central Plaza, the Cloudraker District is home to the Albrecht Jansson Museum, which showcases archaeological exhibits and regularly displays works by Kansujian’s most distinguished artificers. Located on the south end of the riverfront is the Heisse-Bakuro Convention Center, an expo hall built to attract and serve the needs of businesses on the Coast looking for contracts and investors. Heilige South of the Cloudraker District is Heilige, a small community of hospitals, apothecaries, dispensaries, and alchemists located at the river’s edge south of the Cloudraker District. Doctors, scholars, and herbalists alike make routine trips between Heilige and both the gardens and zoo in town, seeking new and innovative ways of marrying magic, horticulture, and animal husbandry. All-Sellers' Market Returning east over the Sunward bridge, one immediately encounters the All-Sellers’ Market, a massive continuous interior bazaar which stretches all the way across town. There it’s possible to find just about anything for sale: wonders from the Sea, the finest livestock in the world imported from Calava, a shady cleaning service offering nubile young maids who can be physically altered to the client’s liking. The market forms a physical barrier separating the rest of Kansujian from a warehouse district south of it which supplies the markets and is connected to the Southend Docks, as well as the low-income residential district known simply as Southend.
Visitors are strongly discouraged - even forcefully prevented - from traveling south beyond the All-Sellers’ Market. Guards will cite orders to protect the vendors’ inventory from theft and damage, but all Kansujian citizens know (and accept) that it’s to prevent tourists from seeing the run-down ghetto in which the poorest working class of the city live. Fort Pira On the northern end of the city, similarly walled off from tourists, Fort Pira and the Telas Garrison straddle the river as it exits the Kansujian metropolitan area. The walls open to the public once a season when Telas forces assemble for a grand parade which begins at Fort Pira and ends at the Promenade. These parades are an extension of the Four-Leaves’ Grace, a collection of perennial celebrations which revere the changing of seasons. Arena District Southeast of the Garrison, and north of Kansujian Plaza, the Arena District attracts fans of sporting events from all over the Coast. Wrestling rings, athletic stadiums, and a racetrack constitute the main attractions in this district which, though it is significantly more austere than the Plaza or Cloudraker District, still offers plenty of food, drink, and other entertainment for guests to enjoy.
The Arena District also contains much of the city's limited "middle-class" housing, though the frequent raucous crowds drawn by games and celebrations (which occasionally escalating into district-wide riots) leave much to be desired.
