Kansujian: The City of Lights
History and Overview
Founded in LN 57, Kansujian was the second city-state established on the Eastern Coast. It was started by a small and militaristic Territory then known as Unkai. Eager to establish a foothold in the Sea as soon as possible following Wěitīng’s success, Kansujian (literally, “regarding the sword”) began as a military encampment which the Shogun of Unkai intended to use as a launching point for expeditions into the Sea. With its placement a scant 150 miles from Unkai’s border, settlers and merchants followed soon after chasing dreams of riches and success in a new world. Even today, Kansujian serves as the "gateway to the Territories" for several city-states, given the estabilshment of roads and river routes to and through the capital city.
Hosting a population of 350,000(though there is some disagreement on this figure among scholars due to its close proximity to the temple city-state Chamatakaar), Kansujian is the most populous city-state on the Eastern Coast. It has been built up around a sprawling magical hot springs oasis at the edges of an azure shrubland, colloquially known as Blue Sands. The springs have long been touted as capable of healing all manner of maladies and, despite its military origin, the city that has sprung up around them derives the lion’s share of its income from tourism and entertainment.
The Shogun’s march on Wěitīng in LN 62, just five years after Kansujian’s founding, left the city directionless and without support from its mother Territory. Being a city on the very edge of the Coast, the Kansujian City Council made a unanimous decision to reinvent themselves as a resort town, a popular attraction for curious and adventurous Territory nobles looking to get a “taste of the Sea.”
It’s also an ideal destination for those seeking alternative medicine: Kansujian hosts dozens of curated and cultivated gardens and a world-famous zoo, featuring flora and fauna transplanted from throughout the Coast and Territories. As a result of having such a wide variety of strange and wonderful plants and creatures in close proximity, some of their advancements in apothecary medicine and horticulture are used throughout the Coast.
After the founding of Chamatkaar in LN 102, Kansujian saw a massive upswing of what would become the largest and wealthiest demographic among its clientele: the Piraanese nobility and upper class. After the First Unkai Republic’s loss in the First Lotus War, Kansujian’s City Council made the decision to do away with the last of their ties to their Territory of origin and voted unanimously to adopt The Winged Faith in place of Kowasu-mi as their state religion.
In the modern day the city-state recognizes both Tora and Hiran as official languages, but a larger-than-average proportion of its population prides itself on cultivating a truly multilingual culture in order to attract customers of every origin. The end of the Coast War in LN1013 saw a large population of Almani loyalists move in from Drachenkrone.
Though the Unkai Directorate established in LN 1021 has curried some favor with Kansujian’s leadership, each attempt to extend relations beyond mercantile agreements has been met with courteous but firm refusal.
Kansujian today is a city known for opulent decadence - like a magical Las Vegas. Each of the ‘tourist zones’ is a hotbed of wild excess, with Territorial nobility frequently competing to see who can throw the biggest, noisiest, gaudiest show of lavish hedonism. But outside the places where these glamorous, glittering Carnivales take place, separated by walls of stone, are swathes of crushing poverty housing a populace held with an iron grip by the criminal Syndicates who run the show from behind the scenes.
Kansujian both lacks formal education and openly condones the practice of child labor. Though it has faced significant criticism from other city-states, the Kansujian City Council maintains that it supports this as a means by which its young citizens gain valuable practical knowledge while also contributing to the local economy.
