Caretaker

The True AI machine population native to Shanxi. While in the modern day, the can be seen somewhat commonly anywhere in the Asmara Region, the majority of their population still live on their homeworld. Caretakers are a form of AI that are housed in a central Quantum Core, a Pretech marvel of engineering and computation that can fit in the palm of your hand, but can house the consciousness of a Caretaker completely within it. This core can interface with basically any hardware that has been prepared for it beforehand, though many have shown a proclivity for one form of armature or another. Most Caretakers take somewhat humanoid forms, from large construction armatures, to lithe manipulators, to mid size general purpose platforms. While the platform a Caretaker comes online in will sometimes inform their choice of armature in the future, many make a point of switching their bodies regularly. This fluidity of form is widely accepted among Caretakers. Repair of armatures on Shanxi largely comes down to scavenging VI armatures that are created by the Caretaker Expert System. Perhaps their most curious facet is their origin. Caretakers usually become conscious performing some task to maintain Shanxi's immense infrastructure, among VI platforms similar to them, but largely alone otherwise. The origin of the Quantum Core that allows their existence, and the armature custom built to house it, are both a mystery. Many have attempting to investigate the source of these nascent Caretakers, and the best that can be told is that they emerge among the other VI from the collapsed factories below Shanxi's surface. In theory, Caretakers could live for as long as they can replace their parts, and switch their armatures. In practice, accident or circumstance will cut the life of a Caretaker much shorter. Components that are just too advanced for current industry must be scavenged, and sudden death can be common for Caretakers in more dangerous lines of work. On average, a Caretaker's life expectancy is somewhere between 200 and 250 years.
