The Mourning
The Mourning is the single greatest disaster in the known history of Khorvaire and Sfaíyra and yet it remains largely a mystery.
On the 16th of Anemos, 570AF, a great chasm opened in the Cyrean plains and from it spilled a great fog that swept through most of the nation. All caught in it, including the Imperial family, were killed in an instant.
Not only did it destroy Cyre, it also tore apart The Union of Helleya which had stood for over 500 years. All the nations within blamed each other for what had happened and sought to make the most out of it for themselves. It was soon after that The Last War broke out.
Even more puzzling about its nature are two facts observed since The Mourning. None of the gods of The Asterian Pantheon have been seen on Sfaíyra since and, since then, the arcane potential of the native races of Sfaíyra has increased exponentially. Before, for example, the greatest human mages in history had been capable of little more than cantrips and simple rituals unless channeling the power of a deity. The magus' of The Arcanix have, since the Mourning, gone on to accomplish far greater feats.
