Griffin Summerville

Griffin Alder Summerville (a.k.a. Griff)

Physical Description

Body Features

Most of Griffin's chest, back, arms, and neck, as well as some on his legs and ankles, are scarred.  Any death that did not utterly consume his physical body leaves behind the scars of that which killed him.  They do fade eventually, but it takes a very, very long time.  Presently, there is a large spell glyph that takes up the whole of his back, deeply scarred.

Facial Features

Griffin is classily lovely, with high cheek bones, a patrician nose, and generous lips.

He has Heterochromia

Special abilities

Griffin is known for his affinity with Storm Magic and as the Lord of Crows.  Much of his transfiguration takes the shape of crows.

Apparel & Accessories

He dresses in a kind of chique, casual, modern way with many charms, talismans, and articles of his craft much of the time.

Specialized Equipment

As with any witch, Griffin uses a large variety or natural stones, herbs, and objects to assist in his magic casting and focus.  He is especially drawn to garnets, amethyst, and banded onyx.  His herbs of choice are alder, birch, lavender, and nightshade.

Personal history

Griffin was born in Birmingham, England in 1661 to Elizabeth and John Summerville and David Kane. Youngest of five boys, his earliest memories were happy and bright. As working class witches during the Restoration, the Summervilles did very well. They'd quietly weathered the dark years of the Interregnum and managed to survive Cromwell's Puritanical reign mostly in tact. For all that England professed to be a protestant nation, there were always those who knew of magic and sought to quietly use it to their ends. The Summervilles made a good living in the crafting of bespoke magical items and enchantments, especially David, who was a goldsmith.

In 1663, John Summerville was taken ill after a bit of dangerous magic and did not recover. He died in the spring of that year. David was called upon by a member of the gentry to perform dangerous magic against his better judgement. He died in the process. A year later, Griffin's oldest brother was also killed performing magic for a noble whom he could not refuse. Tired of losing those she loved unnecessarily, Elizabeth moved the rest of them and her mother to the New World where they could live quietly in peace with the hope that she would not have to watch any more of her children or partners die needlessly.

The Summervilles arrived in the New World in 1669 and established themselves in Salem as an open secret. For the most part, people left the family that lived a little ways outside of town alone. They came when their children were ill, or they could not conceive, or sometimes when they wanted charms of protection. Always very aware that their continued safety and prosperity was in the hands of the community, Elizabeth and her family were careful to only practice white magic. They did not do curses, assist in foul deeds, or cultivate harmful plants.

It was on the passage to the New World that Griffin met Christian Croft, who was the son of Addison Croft, newly posted Magistrate of Salem. Christian was a frail, quiet, and pretty boy and he and Griffin were fast friends. Though Addison Croft never really approved of his son's friendship with the witch, he did not trouble with actually stopping them from being friends.  On this same passage, Griffin met some of the first Sinclaires to establish themselves in the New World.

At the age of ten, Griffin stopped wearing petticoats completely and started wearing boy's clothing exclusively, assuming the name he has bourn since.  His family accepted his identity with grace and understanding and never looked back.  Griffin and Christian's friendship continued to grow and by the time they were twelve, they'd begun the first steps of courting, with stolen kisses and long afternoons together and a blossoming romance.

A series of horrible tragedies in his mid-teens resulted in both the death of him, but also of his family and when he did not remain dead, the consequences of that dramatically and irrevocably changed him.  He sought out and made deals with dark powers, learned forbidden arts, and left a trail of bloody devastation that spanned the whole of New England for almost a hundred years. As he finally ran out of steam just before the American Revolution, the Round Table caught up with him and he spent many years in solitary confinement as punishment for his rampage and misdeeds.  It was the intervention of Lord Velorum, the Avatar of Death, that bought him freedom and Griffin has been somewhat bitter and secretly grateful about it ever since.

For some of the 1800's he attempted to fit in with covens but never quite could, always too bitter and too drawn to dark deeds.  He could not remain a user of the white for long and inevitably burned any friendships he managed to make.  He gave up and became a Witch Hunter, his particular skill set very well suited to the solitary work of hunting down rogue witches like himself.  He continues this work to this day, skirting the edges of polite magical society and doing as he likes.  He is a vain, greedy, and oddly lazy.  He cares little for the feelings of others and does not hide his negative traits.  While he does suffer a few friends, most people he keeps at a distance, assured that he will eventually reap what he sows.

Gender Identity

Griffin is a trans man who goes by he/him.

Sexuality

Gay

Education

Griffin is an avid reader, but never actually finished any formal education.  He's taken classes at various universities over his long life, usually because he was bored, and apprenticed under a variety of magical folk.  As he is a witch, most of his real serious education has been in witchcraft, particularly the masters of transfiguration and storm magic.  He is also a master of several forbidden arts including necromancy and essence manipulation.

Employment

Griffin works as a Witch Hunter.  He hunts down other witches when commissioned by various private entities, organizations, and nations.

Intellectual Characteristics

Griffin is a studious witch when it comes to his craft.  He does his research and takes care to do things right.  He has a rather hungry mind for history and information, delighting in the finding of forgotten lore and magical mastery.  He keeps up to date on current affairs and delights in being informed when people don't think he'll know a thing.  He doesn't actually have a lot of ego where his knowledge is concerned, however.

Morality & Philosophy

Griffin is out for himself alone.  He is selfish, greedy, cruel, bitter, and possessive.  He believes that what one sows they reap.  There is almost no deed too vile that he will not do, nothing too devious.  He has given himself over to hedonism and self-gratification.  Life, as he sees it, does not reward either the virtuous or punish the wicked, so he sees no reason not to serve himself.

Personality Characteristics

Vices & Personality flaws

Aside from the fact that Griffin just has a high labido to begin with, part of the price of some of the more... corruptive... magic he uses is that it drives him to vice.  He is ever hungry for sensation.  For pleasure, for abandon, for pain, and for destruction.  He is nearly driven to do himself and others harm which makes it hard to establish and maintain meaningful relationships.  He drinks a lot, is more than willing to engage in drug use, and is a wild slut.  He is arrogant, reckless, and does not value people or things highly.

Hygiene

Griffin is known to be a little fussy about his personal cleanliness.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Balakai - lover
Millie - Familiar
Helen Doe - Neighbor
Velorum - unwanted fussy aunt
The Amaranth Coven - big, Boston coven he has to deal with, who don't like him.

Religious Views

Griffin is openly hostile about any kind of organized religion. He is a witch, not a Wiccan, though he leaves them be for the most part.

Social Aptitude

He is a high-functioning ambivert who swings between periods of outrageous extroversion and wild introversion.  Most people, despite his arrogance, can't help but find Griffin charming and he's quite good at using that to his advantage.  He knows how to move in the world, from Faery Courts to human slums.  He's had the time to learn the ebb and flow of people.
