Archmagus Gul'Lizul

I can't entirely agree with the people who call me a prodigy. I am merely obsessed with books and enough magic to make them useful. As I have always, and will always say, once you find something you love anyone can succeed. ~Gul’Lizul’s Graduation Speech
Gul’Lizul is a famed wizard and the standing Archmagus of Macarish. His extensive duties within the city range from meeting with the Council of Macarish to overseeing the Mages College. These duties however do not distract him from maximizing his time within the College’s library.

Early Life

Gul’Lizul was born and raised on Dawn Island in Macarish. As the Dawn Islands are a major thoroughfare for trade across 3 continents, Lizul’s childhood was heavily influenced by travelers. Although his family were dairy farmers outside of the capital proper, many caravans and adventurers stopped at the village's Inn.   Lizul says his early obsession with books came from joining his mother at her job as a Barmaid. He discovered many adventurers, especially wizards, carried books with them about their adventurers. Once he grew old enough to read he quickly began trading his allowance for the chance to read these books.   Soon after Lizul’s eleventh birthday one of these traveling wizards offered to teach him a spell or two. Upon finally being able to hold a spellcasting focus Lizul learned about his innate magic. One he to this day argues that all people contain, they must just find their spark. His was in fact a spark. A simple prestidigitation spell that he had read about many times and having researched the spell for years he was easily able to cast it.   With the help of this wizard, Lizul attempted to argue with his parents that he should be allowed to travel the world and hone his magic skills. His request was swiftly and definitively revoked by his parents. However, the, to this day unnamed, wizard blessed Lizul with this wand to continue his practices. Later in his life, Lizul respects his parents for forbidding his travels.   For the remainder of his early teens, Lizul practiced magic daily, learning new spells from traveling adventurers who passed through his town. In exchange for being allowed to practice, he continued to help his parents farm and promised that one day he would pay for them to move to Macarish and leave rural life behind. He would finally get the chance when offered a full-ride scholarship to Macarish’s College of Mages.

Education

One of the many traveling wizards who helped train Lizul turned out to be Niccollo, then professor at the Mages College. Seeing this “prodigy child” he offered the boy a full-ride scholarship as well as offered to pay for his family to live within the city. Although Lizul’s parents declined to live in the city they blessed their son and sent him on his way.   Lizul joined the College at the age of 19, a year older than most students. He claims that because of this he saw himself as an outsider and when unable to find friends, found the school's library instead.
I spent most of my evenings and off periods within the library. Which you would of course say means I probably read a lot of spell books, which I did, but I also had a side interest in reading some more risky books, if you know what I mean. But that had its own successes as I found my future wife while browsing that area.   ~ Archmagus Gul’Lizul
Lizul set records throughout his education being one of five students to receive all perfect scores throughout each grade. The Second Great Fire of Macarish interrupted Lizul’s final exams to graduate from the college.   Halfway through the exams, the fire had grown to the point of overwhelming the city's fire department. All students at the Mages College were forced to end their examination to assist the city in controlling the fire. After 24 hours of attempted fire management, Archmagus Relbin promised that any student actively in examination would be granted full credit when they put out the fire.   It took another 2 days before the fire was contained. However, when it was, Archmagus Relbin granted his promise. Giving full scores to all students in examination. In order to not sully his reputation as a perfect grade student. Lizul argued to retake the test. Archmagus Relbin oversaw the examination and his subsequent perfect score of Lizul.   Upon graduation, Lizul was accepted as Archmagus Relbin’s personal assistant and squire. Throughout this position, Lizul gained a name for himself and began his training to take the position of Archmagus. Twelve years later Relbin retired and Gul’Lizul was elected as Archmagus.

Continued Service

Archmagus Gul’Lizul has continued to serve as the Archmagus of Macarish. Only temporarily stepping down for a year to take care of his elderly parents before they passed. Currently the longest-running Archmagus, Gul’Lizul has served the city for 37 years. He currently continues to hold a 93% approval rating.
