Agos
The River City
Agos is a prosperous city-state and major trade hub located where the Keelwick and Edingar rivers join and become the Surrath river. Surrounded on three sides by rivers, trade is the life's blood of this bustling metropolis.
Outside of the city, on the other side of the rivers, are rich lands of immense farms and cattle ranches. This creates an agricultural bounty that supplies not only the city but all of the city's outlying interests.
Agos is one of the largest cities on the continent of Orwynn, boasting a population of approximately 25,000 people.
The first thing visitors to Agos will notice as they approach this city is the famous defensive wall and it's towers. Agos is entirely surrounded by a 40' stone wall and dotted with large, 50' high, defensive towers. These towers are manned at all times by the city's military guard and have either a ballista or a trebuchet mounted to defend against invaders. The stone used to make the wall and the towers is a local stone found in the Atlean hills simply known as "River granite", so named for its light blue, marbled pattern.
Demographics
Agos is primarily made of humans, which represent approximately 75% of the permanent population. The other 25% is split among mostly gnomes, halflings, half-orcs and half-elves, some dwarves and pure-blood elves, and the occasional Dragonkin or Tiefling (though these are admittedly rare).
There is a large middle class in the city that stems from the significant trade that runs through the city with seven families that are the wealthiest and most powerful merchant families in the city. There are a plethora of professionals of all sorts that make their home in Agos from carpenters, armorers, wagoneers, alchemists, engineers, as well as wizards, herbalists, animal trainers, and more exotic professions. If it is for sale, you can probably find it in Agos.
Government
The current rules of the country of Agos is Queen Roswyn LaFey. She has ruled for the last 15 years and is regarded by most of her people as a fair and benevolent monarch.
Day to day governing is mostly handled by a council of appointed individuals to cover trade, taxes, military, agriculture, etc. with the Queen being an active participant and having the final word on any and all decisions as she sees fit.
The Queen is a widow, her husband having passed 9 years ago, and has two children, both adults.
Defences
Agos is surrounded on all sides by a 40' wall of "River granite". The stone is equivalent to granite in terms of hardness and is reinforced with a number of magical wards that strengthen the walls and shield against attacks both magical and mundane. Evenly distributed along the walls are defensive towers standing 50' in height and large enough to house siege engines such as ballista and trebuchets to defend the city from invaders of any sort.
The land gates to Agos are 30' high and 40' wide, allowing for the transport of even very large equipment or the egress of a large contingent of soldiers. Along the rivers are enormous chains that can be raised and lowered from within the city to prevent ships from entrance or exit along the river routes.
Industry & Trade
Agos is the largest trading hub on the continent of Orwynn and quite possibly the Shattered Isles. Goods from all over pass through this city. Trade and the taxes that it generates have made Agos incredibly wealthy and well known as the Jewel of Orwynn. One of the only things that Agos does not trade in is slaves. The city is strongly against slavery in any form.
The most common exports for Agos include agriculture, blue stone, refined goods, and luxury items.
Imports are largely spices, materials not locally available, and luxury goods.
In addition, Agos is well known for their water mages and engineers, whose services are occasionally leased to other countries for an exceptional fee.
Infrastructure
Through a very prosperous relationship with the gnomish and dwarvish communities in the city, Agos boasts some very impressive infrastructure including but not limited to:
Robust and modern sewers, indoor plumbing, hot water on tap, smooth roads that are well maintained, the defensive towers and siege engines, modern shipyards capable of repairs as well as new builds of almost any kind of water craft and for the very wealthy, there are facilities to build and repair Airships.
Guilds and Factions
There are many factions at work in the city of Agos. Some of them acting in the best interest of the city and its people, some seeking to sabotage, some seeking power, and a few who act for reasons unknown to any but themselves.
The most important factions are:
1. The Seneschal Council - the council is made up of appointees and represents the major aspects of day to date life in the city. There are representatives for Agriculture, Military, Engineering and Infrastructure, Trade, Craftsmen, Health and Welfare, Knowledge and Education, and Magic. Each member of the council is responsible for their area of expertise and is often assisted by committees and subcommittees for more granular areas of their domain. The council is tasked with maintaining the smooth operation of the city, ensuring the well being of its citizens, and advising the Queen as needed.
History
Agos was founded in 4E 1283, relatively early in the Golden Era. Over the next 80 years the city grew in wealth and power as trade flowed through it's gates. In 1365, the walls and defensive towers were built and the city state rose to become one of three great trading hubs on the continent. When the Chaos Wars broke out, Agos was a bastion against the invading hordes and served as a beacon of hope for the people of Orwynn. Though the city was besieged nine times during the war, it was not until the famous battle of Agos in 1591, that the city fell to the enemy. Sacked and left in ruins it lay abandoned for 22 years until Jordan LaFay, a wealthy hero of the Chaos Wars and someone whose ancestors hailed from this once great city, returned and invested in rebuilding the city. Once again, through a strong partnership with gnomes and dwarves renowned for their skill in engineering and construction, the city rose again. Through their efforts, the city was rebuilt and by 1625, the city once again shone as a beacon of strength. Jordan LaFay's efforts cemented his lineage as the ruling family of Agos, which has remained through three generations (though there have been a couple of close calls).
Agos is one of the great success stories of the races of men rising from the ashes of the Chaos Wars and heralding a return of civilization in this area.
Architecture
Most of the city structures are built using "River granite", a stone common to the area but not found anywhere else in the Isles. Homes and other buildings will use wood trim that is brightly painted and often decorated with images related to trade, ships, and river themes.
