Inside Nakiri Reef you'll find a strange city. Inside the atoll the Sirens have dug out a large settlement, while not actually damaging the corals. This is a skill that the Sirens have mastered thousands of years ago.

Parts of the City

The major parts of Nakiri is the Undercity, Old Town, and the Atoll Top. The Undercity is a network of tunnels beneath the atoll that was dug out when the space in the actual reef ran out. Old Town was originally only the surviving part after the storm in AE 542, but now includes some of the older parts of the newer reef parts. The Atoll Top is, as its name implies, the part of the city on the upper parts of the Nakiri atoll.

History

Nakiri is old - almost as old as the reef it's build in. Yet, during the great storm of AE 542 it was almost wiped out completely. The turbulent waters almost completely broke the whole atoll apart, ripping the fragile coral reef in pieces. As this is an area that doesn't naturally get storms like these, the reef wasn't prepared for this kind of destruction. As the city was using the corals as its structure, most of the city was made uninhabitable. About a quarter of the population was killed, and only about a fifth still had housing.

Yet, the city survived. Starting again as barely anything more than a small village, Nakiri stubbornly held itself afloat in a manner of speaking. With the reef mostly destroyed, there wasn't too much room to expand the city. That's when the Undercity of Nakiri was dug out.

Slowly, the reef grew back, making more room for the city to expand. Now, a millennium and a half later, the reef is back to its former size.
