Nakiri Reef

Whoa.

I knew there would be a lot of life on the Nakiri Reef, but I didn't expect that much.

I just... There was so much... Just... Whoa.

— Overwhelmed visitor

There are few areas in the world more colorful or more full of life than Nakiri Reef. Once an island long sunken beneath the water surface in Vutara Bay, the circular feature has survived the weather of the Bay for thousands of years and is now the home of a myriad of different aquatic lifeforms.

In addition to the rich diversity of wildlife the atoll is hiding one of the larger Siren settlements on Shireon. This city, named Nakiri, is named after the reef where it was founded.

Teeming With Life

When you talk about the different lifeforms that inhabit Nakiri Reef with someone who has been there, they'll most likely focus on the fish and corals that live there. These are the most visible beings that live here. Some of the fish are colorful to be camouflaged against the rainbows of corals they live in. Other fish seem to be more flamboyant with their coloring, perhaps to signal their venomous properties or to attract a mate.

But fish and coral aren't the only creatures you find here. The atoll has no less than fifteen different kinds of shrimp only living here, varying in size from a few centimeters to the size of a grown man's hand. The largest of these, the giant reef shrimp (pictured to the left) is one of the most colorful as well. Other shrimp types have more subtle colors, or have no color at all.

Another diverse group of fauna found on Nakiri Reef is sea snails. Most of the sea snails living on the reef is poisonous. One notable exception is the Placeholder Name snail, which is considered a delicacy.
