Xarum (ZAR-oom)
(a.k.a. She-or-laitha [Elvish], Tiris [Dwarven])
Xarum, the God of Despair, was created by Baal the Betrayer sometime before the First War of Ashes. Baal, who wanted children of his own, attempted to shape a child and breathe life into it, using his own blood. He succeded in giving life to Xarum, but could not make him immortal like the other gods, because he did not have the lifegiving powers of his sister. Xarum grew old and died, presumably over many centuries, but still in a "natural" span of time for a mortal, and therefore a short time for an immortal creature. But because he was given life through the blood of an immortal god, he was not truly mortal either, and so, when he died, he continued living in undeath, his flesh rotting from his bones and his body and soul suffering excrusiating pain. Thus he became the God of Despair, of deadly disease and other unavoidable fate, and of destruction and decay. He is said to long for the day all of creation is undone, as only then can he truly be set free from his torment.
