Finnegan Applewood

Finnegan is the adopted son of a widow in a village of humans, forever waiting for his growth spurt to jolt him above his stout height of 3' 2". But the growth spurt never came, and to all but himself it became glaringly obvious that Finnegan was not a small human boy, but in fact, a halfling. As such, he became subject to ridicule and mockery from the rest of the village - human purists that hated any and all outside of their narrow views of race and unity. The only one who continued to care for young Finnegan was his adopted mother, Larna, whose commitment to him afforded her the same ostracization that he suffered. And yet, amidst these bad tides, Finnegan was growing into a well developed being... until one horrible day. Raiders charged into the village, setting ablaze homes and crop-stores, laying waste the the unfortunate trying to flee the streets. Larna hid Finnegan away in a burrow, and pressed into his hand her flute, which she had played to lull him to sleep after hard days, and begged him to play it loudly so that she may find him after the raiders had gone. When the dust settled, and the screams died away, Finnegan blew hard into the flute, loud piercing notes, cutting soundly through the smoke and fog. But no one came. No one for hours, until the heavy trod of boots approached to discover what was still making that awful noise. Caged and imprisoned, Finnegan would spend the next 5 years accompanying the raiders, a "funny little man" whose laughable appearance and silly flute tunes would entertain the raiders between the heat of battles. Finnegan was tortured, outraged, and alone, forever wondering if he would ever escape this hell, if he would ever see his mother again... if she was even alive. All hope for him was lost, until one day when he escaped and made his way to Alderdeen .
